Green bags goal on return

24 July 2014

Danny Green haunted his former club on Saturday by scoring the only goal in MK Dons’ pre-season victory over Dagenham and Redbridge.

The 23-year-old winger found the top left-hand corner of the net with a half-volley midway through the first half of Tuesday’s game, to earn Karl Robinson’s side another friendly win – their first against Football League opposition.

“It’s always nice to come back here,” Green told MK Dons Player after the match. “This is my old club and one of my favourites as well so it was really good. We got the win, though, which is the main thing.

“It was a good workout because Dagenham are a tough team. No disrespect to the teams we played in Ireland or on the weekend, the standard is much higher so you have to be on your game a bit.

“The Gaffer told us that this is where we need to 'up it a bit' and I think we did that. In the first half we did some good bits and we carried it on into the second half. There are still some bits we need to iron-out and work on but overall I thought we played well."

Green’s 30th minute goal was his second of the summer so far, having netted from the penalty spot in the 1-0 triumph over Aylesbury FC on Saturday lunchtime and the former Charlton Athletic man hopes to continue that form into the season.

“Last year I had a good pre-season, it’s nice to get some momentum and score goals. I took mine well today but I felt I should have had another one which hit the post. It’s good signs and hopefully I can keep it going into the season.”

Dean Lewington’s Testimonial on Sunday will see the Dons return to stadiummk for the first time since May although in Green’s case, it will be the first time since his short-term loan spell ended back in October 2013.

“It will be nice to get out on the pitch at stadiummk again,” he added. “It’s nice to come to grounds like (Dagenham) but it’s quite tight whereas back at home there is a bit more space to spray it around a bit and you have more time on the ball.

“Hopefully it will be a good occasion on Sunday. Dean deserves it, he’s a great player and a great captain.”
