Defender Tom Flanagan made his first start for Stevenage on Saturday but couldn’t prevent them from suffering a damaging home loss to Colchester United.
Flanagan and his Boro team-mates took the lead after 11 minutes but three U’s goals, including one from Flanagan’s former Dons team-mate Jabo Ibehre, condemned Graham Westley’s men to a fourth defeat in five games.
The result keeps Stevenage rock bottom of Sky Bet League 1 with just four games remaining.
Elsewhere, Ian McLoughlin kept his third clean-sheet in eight games for Newport County as they beat Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 at Adams Park.
McLoughlin helped shut-out the Chairboys in South Buckinghamshire to keep the Exiles seven points clear of the Sky Bet League 2 relegation zone.
Youngster Harry Hickford also helped his loan side, Chelmsford City, keep a clean-sheet on the weekend as the Clarets held the Skrill South leaders Eastleigh to a goalless draw at Melbourne Stadium.
Second-year scholar Hickford, in his first spell away from stadiummk, put in an excellent defensive performance alongside City defender Marlon Patterson to push the Essex-club four points clear of the bottom three.
Midfielder Luke Chadwick, meanwhile, was rested as Cambridge United thrashed Hyde United 7-2 to keep their slim hopes of an automatic promotion berth alive.
