International round-up

10 September 2013

Samir Carruthers was sent off for Republic of Ireland Under-21s in their 4-0 defeat to Germany last night.

The Aston Villa loanee, who scored his first international goal for the Boys in Green in their win over Faroe Islands last month, was shown two yellow cards by referee Domagoj Vuckov as Republic of Ireland youngsters slipped to their first loss of the campaign.

A two minute brace from Hoffenheim star Kevin Volland after Moritz Leitner’s 14th minute opener had the Germans ahead 3-0 at the break, with Philip Hoffmann rounding off the scoring with a fierce shot late-on.

Carruthers and his Irish team-mates never really had a foothold on the game but due to their convincing win over Faore Islands they still occupy third place in Group 6 behind Germany and Montenegro.

In international action tonight, will be defender Lee Hodson, whose Northern Ireland side make the long trip to Luxembourg for their World Cup qualifier.

Hodson’s Northern Irish side have won just once this qualifying campaign but after their encouraging performance against Portugal last weekend they’ll hold hope of turning over a Luxembourg outfit which lie at the bottom of their group.

Under-16 starlet Kevin Danso will also be on international duty this evening with Austria as they take on Poland in two friendly matches.
