International Dons

14 October 2013

Two Dons players were involved in international action over the weekend, including Under-18s starlet Brendan Galloway who scored his first England goal on Friday night.

Galloway, 17, was drafted into the England Under-18s squad last week for the first time since his call-up to the Under-16s side last summer. The versatile defender played the full ninety minutes for Neil Dewsnip’s men, netting his first international goal in the 2-1 victory.

England and Galloway will take on the Hungarians for a second time at St. George's Park later this evening.

Elsewhere, Lee Hodson played 66 minutes for Northern Ireland in their 2-0 defeat to Azerbaijan.

The Northern Irish cannot make the cut for next year’s tournament but would have wanted to end their campaign on a high by winning their final two games. Instead, they suffered a shock loss to their Group F rivals courtesy of goals from Rufat Dadasov and Mahir Shukorov.

Hodson, who has started Northern Ireland’s last three matches, played at right wing-back for Michael O’Neill’s side before being replaced by Aberdeen winger Niall McGinn mid-way through the second half.

Northern Ireland have one final World Cup qualifier tomorrow evening, a difficult trip to Israel in a match which will be shown live on Sky Sports.

Finally, loanee winger Samir Carruthers has linked up with Republic of Ireland Under-21s ahead of their UEFA Under-21 Qualifier with Romania at The Showgrounds stadium in Sligo.

The Boys in Green were held to a scoreless draw by Romania last week, so will be hoping to go one step further tomorrow night in order to reclaim their place in the top two. Carruthers missed the first clash because of suspension.
