Loan round-up

21 January 2013

Ian McLoughlin continued his impressive start at Walsall this weekend, helping them put an end to AFC Bournemouth’s unbeaten run.

The Saddlers ran out 3-1 winners at the Bescot Stadium on Saturday, making it four wins on the spin for Dean Smith’s men as they climbed into 10th in the League 1 table, only two points off of a play-off place.

McLoughlin, who was making his home debut for the West Midlands outfit after joining them on a one-month loan over a week ago, restricted a predatory Cherries strike-force to only a solitary goal as he played a key role in Eddie Howe’s side’s first defeat in seventeen League outings.

Walsall drew first blood in the contest courtesy of Sam Mantom, who was able to rifle home through a crowd of players from the right-hand side of the box, before Will Grigg added a second from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time.

The Cherries got themselves back into the game four minutes after the restart when Brett Pittman was able to squeeze the ball past McLoughlin at the near post following a testing cross but the hosts sealed the victory in the 79th minute after Grigg once again converted from 12-yards after Eunan O’Kane handled in the area.

McLoughlin and company will now prepare for a trip to Essex to take on struggling Colchester United at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, looking to sneak into a play-off position for the first time this season.
