Samir Carruthers scored his first goal at Under-21 level last night, in Republic of Ireland U-21’s 4-1 win over Faroe Islands.

The Boys in Green came from behind to clinch a convincing away victory in their opening UEFA European Under-21 qualifying game thanks to goals from Carruthers, Matthew Doherty, who scored twice, and Aiden O’Brien.

Carruthers, who joined the Dons on loan from Aston Villa last Saturday, weaved his way past three Faroe Islands defenders before finishing at the second time of asking to bring the visitors level after Gilli Sorenson at put the home team ahead.

Carruthers then played a crucial role in Ireland’s second goal, crossing for Doherty to convert his first of the match just after the hour mark with the Wolves defender making sure of the win two minutes from time with a neat finish. Aiden O’Brien then finished things off for the Irish after pouncing on a defensive error to make the journey back to Dublin a sweet one.

Elsewhere, Lee Hodson was an unused sub as Northern Ireland pulled off a shock victory over Russia in their World Cup Qualifier.

Hodson’s Northern Ireland side were without a win heading into the difficult clash with Fabio Capello’s Russia but a first half header from Martin Patterson was enough to see off the group favourites and hand the Northern Irish a memorable victory.
