Sign up for Stadium Rush

12 September 2012

Olympic gold medallist Greg Rutherford is challenging the people of Milton Keynes to go for gold and sign up for Stadium Rush.

The event, on October 21, challenges people of all ages to run up the 1,740 steps inside stadiummk to raise money for Shelter and their work with homeless and badly housed families.

The charity hopes the event will raise a vital £40,000 at a time when homelessness is rising across the country, including in Milton Keynes.

Over the past two years, the number of homeless families in temporary accommodation like hostels and bed and breakfasts in the area has more than doubled, now reaching over 170 households without a permanent roof over their head.

Shelter’s advice centre in Milton Keynes helps thousands of people each year, providing support to help them stay in their homes.

Casualty star Gemma Atkinson will race alongside Milton Keynes runners at the event.

Olympic long-jump gold medal winner Greg Rutherford said: “I’m calling on people in Milton Keynes and beyond to step up to the challenge of Stadium Rush.

“Living in Milton Keynes, I know that when people in this town put their minds to something, we’re a force to be reckoned with. Stadium Rush is an amazing way for us to support Shelter’s work helping families at risk of losing their home, and get a top workout at the same time.

“This is the perfect opportunity for people in Milton Keynes to carry on the spirit of the Olympics by really going for gold.”

Helene Vancliff, manager of Shelter’s Milton Keynes housing advice service, said: “At a time when we’re seeing more and more people come to us for help, every penny raised at this event will be ploughed back into helping families stay in their homes, or help those already homeless to get back on their feet.

“There’s never been a better excuse for the people of Milton Keynes to lace up their trainers and hit the stairs. I’m training hard for the race and I hope local people will join us.”

Stair-running is the newest trend in fitness, burning twice the calories of normal running. Most people will make it around the Stadium Rush course in twenty minutes.
