Williams up for Player of the Month gong

10 October 2012

Shaun Williams has been nominated for the npower League 1 Player of the Month Award for September.

With two months completed the season is beginning to take shape and with September now over, it is time to reward the month’s standout performers.

Williams featured in all six of the Dons’ League 1 matches last month, helping the side through a busy spell as they conceded just three goals in six games. In the past year the Irishman has converted from a midfielder to a centre-back with ease and has looked solid alongside both Antony Kay and Gary MacKenzie this season.

The Dons defender though does face tough competition for the gong with Tranmere Rovers’ Jake Cassidy and Walsall’s Florent Cuvelier also nominated for the award.

Cassidy has been in sensational form, netting seven goals in six games in September. The Welsh teenager, who is on loan from Wolves until January, bagged a hat-trick in the 4-0 rout of Colchester United and two more in the 5-2 away win at Crawley Town.

Cuvelier, on loan from Stoke City, helped inspire Walsall’s stellar month with his energy, his range of passing and his ability to shoot from distance which was seen with a cultured finish in the Saddlers’ 2-1 win at Portsmouth.

The winner will be announced on Friday 12th October, with the final decision made by a Football League judging panel.

The Player of the Month panel sees npower Sponsorship Manager Emma Collins joined by Wolves legend Don Goodman, BBC Sport’s Mark Clemmit and The Football League’s Head of Communications, John Nagle.
