Dons boss Karl Robinson was left disappointed after his side’s trip to Kettering Town on Saturday.
Robinson planned to put on a show for Dons fans who made the trip to Nene Park after their successful pre-season training tour of the Republic of Ireland.
However, the state of the playing surface quickly forced Robinson to alter his team for the game. The Dons withdrew a number of players from the game as an injury prevention measure and the players were instructed to take it easy on the pitch too.
Speaking after the nil-nil result, Robinson said: “We have played here two out of the last three years and the pitch has always been immaculate. That pitch was difficult, I told the players to play at 60 per cent because it’s not good for our preparation.
“We had planned for most of our starting 11 to start the game and play 90 minutes but I couldn’t allow it.
“I was debating whether or not to play the game but as I came out to the pitch to call it off I saw how many of fans we had brought and it would have been unfair to them and the Kettering fans who had paid good money to get into the stadium. Unfortunately, we felt we couldn’t put on a performance; it was more a kick-about in the park.
“The most important part of the game was we came through with no injuries so we can up our game this week and get ready for Norwich.”
The Dons face a huge 10 days in their preparations for the new season as they take on Premier League sides Norwich City on Friday, 7.45pm, and Fulham on Tuesday 7th August, 7.45pm.
