MK Dons FC Ladies got their preseason campaign off to a great start thanks to a first half screamer from new signing Leah Cudone.
The Ladies travelled to Radcliffe Olympic on Sunday and earned themselves a confidence boosting 1-0 win.
After a grueling pre season programme that saw the players back in training from the end of June, the Dons were keen to give minutes to a number of new recruits as well as some exciting youth prospects who have progressed through to the First Team from last years FA Licensed Centre of Excellence.
Young striker Leah Cudone, making her Dons debut, gave an accomplished performance and bagged the Dons’ first goal of the season with an impressive strike from distance to top off a solid all round performance.
Numerous trialists were also given a run-out in a game the home side dominated but the early goal proved to be decisive and the new look squad battled to hold onto their lead and begin the season with a victory.
First Team Manager John Dyer, taking charge of his first game for MK Dons FC Ladies, told mkdons.com: “We wanted to give everyone an opportunity to play and this gave a slightly unrealistic edge to the game, but it resulted in a hard working and pleasing performance.
“We know we have more work to do, but a number of players impressed me and with 10 players still to return from holidays and injury, it is already looking very competitive for places in that starting 11.”
There was also a special mention for young Bryony Levitt from Metcalfe: “Bryony Levitt was one player who really impressed me.
Coach Leon Metcalfe also added: “We were missing a number of experienced faces but the girls dug deep and we were impressed with just how hard the younger players worked.”
“She he has come up through the Centre of Excellence, another sign that the system can help to produce talented individuals and hopefully it will continue to flourish and produce more future stars.”
One of the many players still to return is last season’s Young Player of the Season Lil Stanton who returns to the squad this weekend knowing that she has been invited in to an England Women’s U19 Talent Identification Training Camp.
