Preview: Forest Green Rovers Under-23s

All you need to know ahead of tonight’s Central League clash...

22 January 2018

mkdons.com previews this evening’s Central League fixture against Forest Green Rovers, taking place at Brackley's St James Park stadium.

Edu Rubio’s side are back in Under-23 action tonight following a two-week break from Central League football.

Rubio’s squad made the perfect start to 2018 as they overcame AFC Bournemouth 2-1 away from home, with goals from Brandon Thomas-Asante and Osman Sow.

The result lifted them three points behind top-of-the-table AFC Wimbledon in the Central League South East.

Kick-off is at 3pm.

Forest Green Rovers Under-23s are one of five sides that make up the Central League South West division and currently sit at the foot of the table.

The Rovers have conceded 12 goals in their three defeats but have found the net five times. After their clash with Bristol Rovers Under-23s was called off two weeks ago - they’ll be itching to take to the field for the first time since November.

MK Dons were originally due to host AFC Bournemouth, however, the fixture was postponed and rearranged for the following day – this time in Bournemouth.

The late change of venue didn’t affect the Dons, who took a first-half lead courtesy of Brandon Thomas Asante’s long range strike. Osman Sow, who was serving a suspension from first-team football, grabbed the second goal of the game with 68 minutes on the clock as he turned home a low cross.

There was time for Bournemouth to find the net after Mikael Ndjol converted a late penalty, however, despite some late pressure from the home side, Rubio’s team held on for all three points.

Forest Green Rovers suffered their third defeat of the season after goals from George Lloyd, Kyle Storer, Matt Bower and Daniel O’Shaugnessy secured a 4-2 win for Cheltenham Town. Toni Gomez and Will Randall were on the scoresheet for Rovers during the defeat.

Dean Lewington will be hoping to feature for MK Dons tonight. The defender last played for the Dons in November and is included in Rubio’s squad for the clash.

Elsewhere, Tommy Hope, Finn Tapp and Oran Jackson will battle it out for a starting berth in defence, while Brandon Thomas-Asante, Sam Nombe, Hugo Logan and Giorgio Rasulo will be looking for some all important minutes later tonight.

Tickets are priced at £6 adults, £3 over-65s and £1 under-18s while under-12s can attend for FREE. Entry can be paid for on the night at St. James Park – cash only. Gates open at 6pm.

Supporters wishing the follow the action from home can do so via the Match Centre/Twitter, while a full match report will be available to view on mkdons.com after the final whistle.

Report: MK Dons U23 3-1 Forest Green Rovers U23

Lewington returns in Under-23s victory...

22 January 2018

Dean Lewington returned to action and helped MK Dons Under-23s to a 3-1 victory over Forest Green Rovers at Brackley Town.

David Kasumu opened the scoring before a Sam Nombe brace as Edu Rubio’s side made it back-to-back wins in the Central League South.

Lewington was the standout name in Edu Rubio’s starting XI. The Club captain made his first Dons appearance since November as the senior figure in a relatively youthful side.

Inside the opening three minutes both Brandon Thomas-Asante and Giorgio Rasulo shot over the crossbar, the latter after receiving a defence-splitting pass from Lewington.

The Dons continued their dominance and it didn't take long for them to take a deserved lead as on 12 minutes, David Kasumu collected the ball on the edge of the Forest Green area and beat Harry Pickering with a right-footed effort. 1-0.

Almost immediately after the re-start, Rubio’s side won themselves a free-kick from which Giorgio Rasulo produced a save out of Harry Pickering, who then kept out an attempt from Sam Nombe.

Nombe went close again on 17 minutes before Thomas-Asante saw a shot deflect wide of the right post, after the forward had turned deep inside the Forest Green box.

The visitors threatened for the first time just before the half-hour mark when former Don Keanu Marsh-Brown played in teammate Tahvon Campbell. The striker got the shot away but it was blocked by a sliding tackle from Oran Jackson.

After dealing with the resulting corner, the Dons went straight up the other end and Thomas-Asante saw a one-on-one effort saved by Pickering.

They soon made it two-nil with Sam Nombe the scorer - the young forward finished cooly first-time from Hugo Logan’s cutback. 2-0.

Four minutes later, Nombe turned provider, getting to the byline and picking out Thomas-Asante with a cross. Unfortunately, Thomas-Asante was unable to turn home at the near post.

Forest Green Rovers were then presented with an opportunity to reduce the deficit after a foul on the edge of the area. Keanu Marsh-Brown took the set-piece and struck the crossbar but the loose ball fell kindly for Alex Whittle, who tapped into an empty net. 2-1.

At the start of the second half, the Dons went close through Rasulo, who produced a save out of Pickering. Rasulo followed up with another effort, which was sent wide of the right post.

Rubio’s side saw plenty of the ball but were unable to extend their advantage until the 73rd minute when Nombe drove deep into the Forest Green area and fired past Pickering in the Rovers goal. 3-1.

Starting XI: Sietsma; Tapp, Jackson, Lewington (c); Kasumu; Evans, Rasulo, Logan, Sole; Nombe, Thomas-Asante.

Subs: Jones, Wright, Hope, Pattison, Bird.

Goals: Kasumu (12), Nombe (33, 73)
