Report: AFC Wimbledon 2-0 MK Dons Under-18s

Young Dons exit league cup…

22 August 2023

MK Dons Under-18s fall out of the EFL Youth Alliance League Cup competition following a 2-0 defeat.

Although a journey throughout the competition saw the young Dons lift the cup last season. This year, saw the side eliminated within the early stages of the tournament.

AFC Wimbledon had created a two-goal deficit within the first half of the fixture. MK Dons couldn’t match the score-line created within the first 45 minutes of action, which ultimately saw their exit from the League Cup.

Lead Player Development Head Coach John Bitting had this to say about the tie:

“Their first goal came from a number of behavioural errors made out of possession. The second was a failure to complete our roles when caught in transition, which happens within games.

“The boys didn’t complete what was asked of them. Jacques (Maghoma) and I had given the lads clear instructions in terms of how we wanted them to play in possession, but that wasn’t fulfilled today.

“When we’re not doing the basics very well, not creating or scoring goals, then it puts us under more strain and pressure. If we’re not doing that then we will need to be very good out of possession and that’s something that we still have got a lot of work to carry out on.”

Bitting added “It’s not even unfortunate today. I’m disappointed with the way that we’ve exited a tournament that we won last year in the manner that we did.

“I think that there’s so much more that we can offer and give as a collective and we’re not showing that at the moment.

“There’s a lot that we will all take away from this game, myself, Jacques and the players need to take ownership too. It doesn’t matter who the game is against, it matters about their behaviours and how they implement the things they have learnt.”
