MK Dons maintained their 100 percent record in the Youth Alliance League with a 2-0 win over Barnet at Woughton-on-the-Green.

Goals in each half from striker Dylan Asonganyi, who has now scored seven in five games, helped the Dons to a deserved victory over the Bees.

Edu Rubio made two changes from the side that won 3-1 away at Gillingham last weekend with Jenson Wright and Recoe Martin coming into the starting XI in place of Jay Bird and David Kasumu.

The hosts thought they had taken the lead on 27 minutes when a free-kick whipped in from the left ended up in the net. However, the officials judged that the ball was glanced in from close range by a Dons player in an offside position and so the goal did not stand.

Five minutes later, the Dons did go in front after good interplay on the edge of the box between midfielder Bradley Bell and Asonganyi lead to the striker getting through on the Barnet goal. The Dons number nine showed good composure and footwork to hold off the defenders, round the keeper and convert the chance to make it 1-0.

A few minutes before the break the Dons could have doubled their advantage when a shot from Martin on the edge of the area hit the woodwork, before rebounding to Asonganyi whose effort rolled just wide of the left post.

The home side had controlled the majority of the first half allowing the Londoners limited chances and on 62 minutes Bell’s right-footed shot from the edge of the area was tipped wide as the Dons continued to press for a second.

With just seven minutes remaining, a deserved triumph was sealed by the Dons when Asonganyi netted his second of the match. He picked the ball up on the left, danced into the box, beat a couple of Barnet players, manoeuvred himself into a central position inside the area and had an easy finish to make it 2-0.

It was an excellent way to round off a thoroughly professional performance from the Under-18s, who controlled the game throughout and were great value for a fifth successive league win.

After the match, Rubio said: “I was very happy with the boys today. It was one of those games that wasn’t going to be pretty – the opposition were very strong and physical so it was a real challenge initially to get the breakthrough.

“Once we did that, I felt we had the game under control and eventually we managed to get the second goal which killed the game off. The boys were very professional in their performance today – they were excellent defensively and off-the-ball.

“That win felt better than a 5-0 for me because it was a win that we really had to work for. I am very happy for Dylan scoring two goals today but it comes from the work the rest of the team do.

“We have five wins out of five so far but they don’t count when we go into the next game – we will have to show the same energy as before. The boys know they are on course to do something good this season if they keep working and if they never believe they are unbeatable.

“They must carry on working hard, remain humble and stick to what we are doing because it is working.”
