Report: MK Dons 1-0 Sutton United

MK Dons go through to the second round...

9 August 2022

MK Dons progressed to the second round of the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 victory over Sutton United.

Conor Grant scored the only goal of the fixture, in a match which Liam Manning's men dominated from start to finish.

Kick-off
Kemp won an early throw which he swiftly performed so that he could find the run of Grant, the midfielder then cut the ball across box which located Burns, whose sliced attempt went wide. The ball was recycled in toward Dennis, but his header glanced past the far post.

Bugiel was quick to snatch the ball high up the field, but Tucker's reaction to the danger was rapid, which allowed the defender to produce a brilliantly timed slide-tackle.

Sutton appealed for a penalty on the ten-minute mark, after Neufville went down as O’Hora shielded the ball out of play, Breakspear made his decision and awarded the Dons a goal-kick

Grant and Dennis linked-up well which allowed them to find Kemp on the right side of the box, the winger shot from close-range but the ball deflected behind the by-line.

Burns received a long ball from Lawrence and skipped away from two Sutton defenders, to allow himself space for a shot which whistled over the bar - Burns, once again, in the thick of the action as he ran past multiple bodies, but he was unable to get the final shot away.

Bugiel registers the Yellow’s first shot on target in the 25th minute, which Cumming comfortably saved – Liam Manning’s men then reacted with multiple shots on target which Sutton defend well.

Devoy’s strike from the edge of the area was met by Rose, Sutton then created a chance up the other end which forced Tucker to throw himself at the shot goal-bound, the number four produced an excellent block to keep the score level five minutes before the half.

GOAL – Devoy registered an assist on his debut, under the lights of Stadium MK, with a pass through to Grant, who skipped past a Sutton defender who slid across the box, the midfielder then produced a composed finish across goal with a few minutes of the 45 left to play. 1-0

Liam Manning’s men led going into the break after Grant’s moment of magic, a great goal from the number 16 separated the two sides within the first-half.

Second-half
Five minutes into the half Kemp found the run of Dennis in-behind, but Jonathan Barden was aware and prevented the lead from doubling. The Dons continued their momentum and Lawrence fired a cross toward Burns, whose header was just wide of the post.

Creative play from Burns, who clipped the ball over-the-top into Dennis, but the forward collided with Louis John and a free-kick was given against. Liam Manning’s men continued to show their dominance, as most of their play occured within Sutton’s half.

Dawson and Grant connected with one another once again, this time, it resulted in Grant’s attempt from the edge of the area being dragged wide. MK Dons continued the attacks in the 65th minute, with Burns hitting one from range which was dealt with by Rose.

Joe Kizzi’s strike travelled through a number of white shirts, but his attempt was off target and went behind for a goal-kick.

O’Hora threw his body in front of Beautyman’s strike which helped guide the ball out for a Sutton corner, the delivery was then dealt with by the Dons defence.

A great move from the home side which allowed Louie Barry a shot from a tight angle on the right of the area, the powerful hit was palmed out by Rose and swept clear by the Yellow’s.

Burns again, pressed the attack as he covered the field to reach a ball cleared into Sutton's half, after he met with it, the winger skipped past Robert Milsom and cut inside to create a shooting opportunity, which Rose was able to keep out.

As the match entered the final stages Liam Manning’s men dug in and defended well in order to see out the victory. Grant’s goal before the break proved to be the decider, as MK Dons advanced into the second round of the Carabao Cup.
