MK Dons’ winning run came to an abrupt end after a 4-2 defeat away at Shrewsbury Town.

Shrewsbury scored three goals in the opening 20 minutes and Russell Martin’s side never truly recovered.

Will Grigg did pull one back with his second in as many games but Sean Goss’ second-half finish put any hopes of another dramatic comeback to bed, with Charlie Brown’s late goal proving nothing more than a consolation.

The loss – the Dons’ first for six matches – saw them fall back down to 13th in the Sky Bet League One table.

The Dons made two changes from the weekend win over Northampton - one of which was enforced. Ben Gladwin replaced an injured Scott Fraser while Cameron Jerome came in for Joe Mason. Jordan Houghton makes his return after three months on the sidelines - he was on the bench.

Just as they did on Saturday, Martin’s men fell behind early on, with Goss firing home from Donald Love’s cross just four minutes in. 1-0.

Things got even worse, when Harry Chapman was brought down in the area by Gladwin during Shrewsbury’s next attack. Ollie Norburn converted from the spot to double host’s lead with less than eight minutes played. 2-0.

A nightmare opening 20 minutes was compounded when Shrewsbury were awarded a second penalty for an alleged handball by Darling. Curtis Main took the spot-kick and converted. 3-0.

The Dons responded after that and, with their first shot on goal, they reduced the deficit. Ethan Laird did brilliantly down the right to work his way deep into the area, before cutting a ball back for an alert Grigg, who made no mistake from close range. 3-1.

Jerome had a great opportunity on 28 minutes to bring the Dons within one but his right-footed shot was too close to Matija Sarkic.

The final 15 minutes of the first half paled in comparison to the opening half an hour, as neither side threatened adding a fifth goal before the break.

A fifth goal did arrive 12 minutes into the second half and it was Shrewsbury who scored it. Goss added a second from a low Josh Vela cross. 4-1.

Martin made a triple change in response, bringing Joe Mason, Daniel Harvie and Houghton off the bench – the latter for his first appearance in three months. Brown and Lasse Sorensen followed soon after.

Houghton forced a save from Sarkic with 19 minutes left to play while Harvie went close with a fierce strike across goal, which flew just past the post.

The Dons did pull a goal back through Brown on 82 minutes, with his second goal in as many games. The striker turned home Surman’s cross from inside the six-yard box, after Darling saw his effort blocked on the line. 4-2.

Brown and O'Riley both had chances after that but neither were able to make the Dons' second anything more than salvaging some pride.
