Preview: Crewe Alexandra

All you need to know ahead of tod's Sky Bet League One clash...

5 April 2021

MK Dons return to Sky Bet League One action this afternoon when they take on Crewe Alexandra, looking to secure a fifth straight victory.

After navigating a congested fixture list, the Dons are playing for the first time in 10 days after their Good Friday clash with Lincoln City was called off due to Covid-19 issues with the Imps.

Should Russell Martin’s men make it five in a row today, they would match the Club's winning run between February and March during the 2018/19 promotion-winning season, as well as their success streak in the final five games of the 2014/15 campaign.

A fifth straight victory could also see them climb as high as 10th place, and reduce the deficit on the top six to four points.

Kick-off is at 3pm.

THE OPPOSITION
Crewe Alexandra currently sit three places and three points behind MK Dons in the Sky Bet League One table, having made a solid return back to the third tier this season.

Managed by David Artell since January 2017, Crewe have won 14 and lost 14 of their 37 matches in 2020/21, drawing the other nine. They have scored 45 - the eighth-fewest total in the division - but only conceded 48 - only five sides outside the top six have conceded less.

The Railwaymen arrive at Stadium MK in indifferent of form, having won two and lost three of their last five outings. Away from home this term, Crewe have won just five times out of 18, drawn four and lost nine - they did, though, triumph 1-0 at Northampton Town on their last road trip.

Mikael Mandron leads their goalscoring charts with 10 goals to his name this season. Owen Dale is placed second having found the net nine times, while midfielder Oli Finney has scored eight.

LAST TIME OUT
Daniel Harvie’s 75th-minute strike saw MK Dons beat Doncaster Rovers 1-0 at Stadium MK and make it four Sky Bet League One wins in a row.

In a game that the Dons dominated with chances and possession, it took until the final quarter of an hour for them to make a breakthrough – Harvie, the match-winner, with a right-footed strike that beat the impressive Louis Jones in the Donny goal.

The win lifted Russell Martin’s men into the top half of the Sky Bet League One table with eight games left to play in the 2020/21 season.

Crewe Alexandra surrendered a one-goal lead on Good Friday, as they were beaten 2-1 by promotion-chasing Hull City at the Alexandra Stadium.

Chris Porter put the Railwaymen ahead from the penalty spot on 66 minutes but Hull equalised just five minutes later through Josh Magennis, who also converted from 12 yards.

The game looked to be heading for a draw until stoppage time, when Malik Wilks drove home a late Hull winner off the post.

FIGHTING TALK
Dean Thornton: "If you focus on the play offs you can often lose sight of what’s next. Crewe is next for us and it’s the most important game.

“Crewe are a very good team, though. Our analyst speaks really highly of them and he loves how they play and their individual players.

“David has done such a good job there, and full credit to him and his team. They did the job on us at their place, but hopefully we can do the job at home.”

TEAM NEWS
David Kasumu is set to make his return for MK Dons after over three months on the sidelines.

The talented young midfielder hasn't featured since suffering a training injury prior to Christmas but manager Russell Martin revealed in last week's MKDSA Fans Forum that the 21-year-old would be back in the squad.

Kasumu's return will be a huge boost for Martin, who remains without strikers Kieran Agard and Jay Bird, as well as midfielder Ben Gladwin who hasn't been able to feature since the win over Plymouth Argyle.

Crewe Alexandra look to set to remain without midfielders Josh Lundstram and Oli Finney, who are nursing ankle and leg fractures respectively.

Centre-back Luke Offord returned to the matchday squad on Good Friday but didn't feature.

OFFICIALS
Andy Woolmer will be the man in the middle for today's game.

Mr Woolmer has overseen 27 matches so far this term, producing a total of 78 yellow cards. He has sent off one player and has awarded five penalties.

Report: MK Dons 0-2 Crewe Alexandra

Dons fall to first defeat in five games...

5 April 2021

Two goals in six first-half minutes from Mikael Mandron saw MK Dons beaten 2-0 by Crewe Alexandra at Stadium MK.

Mandron opened the scoring on 15 minutes, moments after Cameron Jerome had a goal disallowed for offside.

The Crewe striker then doubled both his and his side’s lead six minutes later – a lead that Russell Martin’s men weren’t able to overcome, as they failed to extend their four-game winning run.

The defeat – a first in five matches – saw the Dons fall one place to 13th in the Sky Bet League One table.

The Dons made three changes from the win over Doncaster Rovers, with Ethan Laird, Louis Thompson and Jerome replacing Matthew Sorinola, Scott Fraser and Will Grigg. David Kasumu was back in the squad for the first time since 19th December as a substitute.

Five minutes in, Andrew Fisher was called into action for the first time, producing a stunning diving save to keep out Mandron’s header from a Harry Pickering free-kick.

Martin’s men then had the ball in the net two minutes later but the goal was disallowed for offside – Cameron Jerome, the scorer, was just about in an offside position from Matt O’Riley’s cross.

The deadlock was broken on the quarter-hour mark when Crewe won possession on half-way and countered with a man advantage. Owen Dale and Mikael Mandron combined, with the latter converting from six-yards despite the best efforts of Harry Darling and Andrew Fisher to keep it out. 0-1.

Within six minutes, Crewe had doubled their lead - Mandron netting a second after bringing down a Kirk cross and rifling a shot past Fisher from a tight angle. 0-2.

Fisher soon had to prevent Tom Lowery from putting the visitors three goals ahead with a routine save. At the other end, the Dons had a chance to reduce the deficit but, following a surging run forward, Louis Thompson couldn’t combine with O’Riley.

Late in the first half, Daniel Harvie broke free down the left and delivered a low ball into the box. Laird did well to meet it but saw his effort blocked by a Crewe defender.

It was Crewe who had the final moment of the first half, with Kirk racing through down the left, only to be foiled by a combination of Warren O’Hora and Fisher. The visitors also had the first action of the second – Kirk, again, involved but this time he saw his shot blocked by a last-ditch tackle from Darling.

There was an opportunity for Jerome three minutes after the re-start, after he read a short back-pass and intercepted it in front of Will Jaaskelainen. The striker’s touch took him into a tight angle, though, and the chance, quickly, went begging.

The Dons' leading goalscorer had an even better chance moments later, following some excellent individual work from Laird. Jerome latched onto the wing-back's through pass and rounded Jaaskelainen but saw his effort on the unguarded goal cannon back off the post.

Crewe wasted a clear opening of their own shortly after, with neither Kirk nor Mandron able to trouble Fisher despite working their way deep into the Dons penalty area.

Martin was forced into a double change just before the hour, due to injuries for Jerome and Thompson. They were replaced by Grigg and Fraser while Kasumu also came on in place of Josh McEachran for his first appearance of 2021.

Fraser was involved in setting up a chance for O’Riley with 69 minutes on the clock – the midfielder’s left-footed strike curled just past the post.

Matthew Sorinola and Charlie Brown were the Dons’ final changes, with a quarter of an hour left to play. Grigg tried to tee up the latter almost instantly but saw his pass across blocked.

O’Riley fired over with a 79th-minute free-kick as Martin’s side continue to push for a way back into the match. Grigg also cleared the crossbar, with a right-footed attempt from 20 yards.

Harvie and O’Riley had later attempts from the edge of the area – the latter resulted in a corner from which Darling had a header saved by Jaaskelainen.

The Crewe goalkeeper then pulled off a terrific diving stop on 88 minutes to deny Brown, whose near-post header looked destined for the top corner.

Jaaskelainen also kept out stoppage-time efforts from O'Riley and Darling, as the Dons were unable to salvage even a goal from a disappointing day at Stadium MK.
