Preview: Wycombe Wanderers

All you need to know ahead of Saturday's Sky Bet League One clash...

16 August 2019

MK Dons are back in Sky Bet League One action this weekend as they face Wycombe Wanderers.

MK Dons make the short journey to Adams Park this Saturday and are set to be backed by over 1,000 supporters.

It'll be the first time the two Buckinghamshire sides have met since March 2012, with the fixture just the ninth meeting between MK Dons and Wycombe Wanderers.

Both the Dons and Wycombe are currently unbeaten in the league and are both sides are yet to ship a goal - albeit Tisdale's outfit have played just once due to their suspension of the opening day clash with Bury.

Kick-off is at 3.00pm.

THE OPPOSITION
Wycombe Wanderers and Gareth Ainsworth are a duo that Paul Tisdale is very fond of, with the Dons manager heaping praise on his opposite number in his Thursday press conference.

Ainsworth oversaw Wycombe's promotion from Sky Bet League Two back in 2018, and then guided the club to a respectable 17th place finish during their return to the third tier of English football.

There is certainly one face who will stand out on the Wycombe teamsheet - that of David Wheeler. The former Don scored the goal that earned MK Dons promotion last season during his loan spell at Stadium MK.

Elsewhere, Wycombe have a number of talented faces including Dominic Gape, Jack Grimmer, Alex Pattison and Club legend Matt Bloomfield to name a few.

LAST TIME OUT
MK Dons secured a place in Round Two of the Carabao Cup courtesy of a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory over AFC Wimbledon at their Cherry Red Records Stadium.

There was nothing to separate the two sides after 90 minutes in south-west London with Luke O’Neill cancelling out David Kasumu’s stunning second-half strike late on, after Conor McGrandles had done the same to Scott Wagstaff in the first half.

Lee Nicholls, who saved a penalty from Joe Pigott during the match, denied Callum Reilly in the shoot-out before Alex Gilbey, on his return to the action, secured the win with a confident strike from 12-yards.

Wycombe Wanderers, meanwhile, suffered a 4-2 penalty defeat to Sky Bet Championship outfit Reading in the first round tie at Adams Park on Tuesday night.

Alex Samuel broke the deadlock with a glancing header before George Puscas levelled for the Royals.

FIGHTING TALK
Paul Tisdale: “Gareth has been there a long time, he knows his role and the dynamic at the club. They seem to get their strategy absolutely spot on, they have total clarity in the way they play and they recruit very well for it.

"They're very selective, patient and probably get good value. And then they execute well. He does exactly the job to get the best out of his team. They really are fit for purpose. I cannot be more of an admirer for a man who works within limitations but gets more than what he pays.

Gareth Ainsworth: "Paul’s a good friend of mine; we’ve had some fantastic games against each other in the past and he’s a great guy, very calm, articulate and a real thinker. His teams are always well organised, they know their jobs, and Saturday will be no different I’m sure."

TEAM NEWS

MK Dons boss Paul Tisdale will didn't reveal any fresh injury concerns following Tuesday's win over AFC Wimbledon.

In terms of absentees, Joe Mason and Brennan Dickenson both missed the midweek win in the Carabao Cup, although it remains to be seen how long either player will be sidelined for. Despite continuing to make progress, Jordan Moore-Taylor remains out with a knee injury.

Both Sido Jombati and Curtis Thompson are major doubts for the Chairboys after missing out at Adams Park on Tuesday night.

OFFICIALS

Trevor Kettle will be the man in the middle this weekend, referring the Dons for the first time since the 1-1 draw against Swindon last September.

Kettle, who has been officiating since 2002, issued 171 Yellow Cards and seven Reds in his 41 games last season.

This year, Mr Kettle has issued five yellow cards and one red in two games.

Anthony Da Costa and Ryan Whitaker will be the assistant referees while the fourth official is Gareth Viccars.

Report: Wycombe Wanderers 3-2 MK Dons

Wheeler strikes late for Chairboys...

17 August 2019

David Wheeler scored a 90th-minute winner for Wycombe Wanderers as MK Dons suffered their first defeat of the 2019/20 season.

The Chairboys opened the scoring from the penalty spot but Jordan Bowery equalised with his first goal for the Club.

Wycombe struck again through Onyendinma - a goal which was cancelled out in the second half by Jordan Houghton’s penalty.

The home side, though, would go on to secure a 3-2 victory courtesy of a late goal from former MK Dons loanee Wheeler.

Boss Tisdale made three changes to the side which beat AFC Wimbledon on penalties in midweek, with George Williams, Jordan Houghton and Hiram Boateng returning to the starting XI while Regan Poole retained his place in defence.

Rhys Healey was back amongst the substitutes after being rested in midweek while there was a spot for David Kasumu, who impressed in the Carabao Cup triumph.

MK Dons started brightly with Dean Lewington whipping a cross into the box early on for Jordan Bowery - the striker, though, couldn’t connect.

Wycombe responded and went within a whisker of breaking the deadlock on six minutes when Fred Onyedinma met a cross with an acrobatic effort. His shot was on target but was pushed around the post by a fingertip save from Lee Nicholls.

Joe Jacobson struck the wall with a ninth-minute free-kick as the home side threatened once again.

They were presented the perfect opportunity to break the deadlock two minutes later as Paul Smyth went down under the challenge of Jordan Houghton. Jacobson stepped up to take the spot kick and cooly slotted his effort down the middle for the opening goal. 1-0.

Agard went close to restoring parity with a near-post header from Boateng’s free-kick on 14 minutes. Dean Lewington also threatened with a low right-footed shot which Ryan Allsop gathered.

The Dons’ best chance of the opening 25 minutes fell to Bowery, who did well to race onto a long ball forward from Cargill but couldn’t beat Allsopp with his strike.

With half an hour on the clock, Onyedinma flashed a free-kick past the post from 25-yards out. Then Bowery had another opportunity on goal - and this time he made no mistake.

The Dons did well down the left to create room for Cargill to deliver a low cross. His ball was inch-perfect and slid right through to Bowery, who had the simplest of finishes to level the scores. 1-1.

Shortly after the re-start, Nicholls kept out an Onyedinma strike shortly before Gape denied Poole with a clearance on the line from the defender’s stabbed effort, moments after the Welshman had seen a low shot saved by Allsop.

Wycombe then restored their lead through Onyedinma, who latched onto a pass from Samuel and drilled a low left-footed shot beyond Nicholls into the far corner. 2-1.

It looked as through the Chairboys would see their lead out through to the break and they did, despite the Dons being awarded a penalty late in stoppage time - Lewington the man fouled. McGrandles stepped to take the spot kick but couldn’t keep his effort down.

The Dons, determined not to let the late drama affect them, started the second half well and Bowery forced a save out of Allsop at his near post within three minutes of the re-start. From the resulting corner, Martin headed wide.

Playing towards the 1,130 travelling MK Dons supporters, Tisdale’s men continued to push for an early equaliser and they were handed another opportunity to do so from the penalty spot on 50 minutes when Jacobson bundled into the back of Agard.

Houghton, this time, took responsibility and he converted - rifling his right-footed shot into the back of the net from 12-yards. 2-2.

Cargill almost made it three soon after with a left-footed volley which Allsop did well to divert over the crossbar with his fingertips.

Tisdale made his first substitution on 64 minutes, replacing Boateng with Alex Gilbey. He was involved right away, winning a corner from which Martin fired over the crossbar.

Wycombe introduced former Dons loanee David Wheeler in the same minute and Martin had to be on guard to turn his low cross behind with a Wycombe man lurking, awaiting a tap in.

The Dons, though, were pushing forward with real intent and they had another shout for a penalty on 70 minutes for a handball but referee Trevor Kettle, this time, waved away appeals. Lewington then had a try from the edge of the area but couldn’t find the target.

Healey entered the fray with 17 minutes to play but it was Adebayo Akinfenwa, a Chairboys subsitute, who wasted a glorious chance moments after coming on - he looked, for all the world, to be tapping in Onyedinma’s cross but failed to connect with the ball inside the six-yard box.

Nick Freeman blasted wide as the hosts went close again before Pattison rifled one over the crossbar from 25-yards.

It was Wycombe in the ascendancy as the clock wound down and in the final minute of regulation time they took the lead for a third time - Wheeler the man on target, against his former club, firing home a low shot from the right-hand side of the box. 3-2.

Starting XI: Nicholls, Williams, Lewington (c) (Brittian 90), Poole, Cargill, Bowery, Agard (Healey 73), Martin, McGrandles, Houghton, Boateng (Gilbey 64).
