MK Dons Women kick-off their FAWNL Southern Premier Division campaign on Sunday when they take on Oxford United at Stadium MK.

Charlie Bill’s side placed fifth in the table last season – their highest-ever finish at this level – and will be looking to build on the positives gained over the past 12 months.

Six of their nine victories were recorded at home and the Dons will, again, hope to make the most of their home advantage when playing in Milton Keynes.

This is the first of three consecutive matches taking place at Stadium MK to start the season. Bill and his team will want to start off on the right foot with victory in their opener on Sunday.

Kick-off is at 3.30pm.

THE OPPOSITION
Oxford United finished third in last season’s FAWNL Southern Premier Division, just two points adrift of Watford, who reached the Championship Play-Off.

The U’s won 16 of their 22 matches, losing only three times all season. Their total of 53 goals scored was bettered only by division-winners Watford while they also conceded the second-fewest amongst FAWNL Southern Premier Division teams – only allowing 15 goals.

All three of their defeats last season happened on the road, although they were victorious on their visit to Milton Keynes last term – edging out a 1-0 victory over the Dons.

FIGHTING TALK
Charlie Bill: “We got exactly what we wanted out of pre-season - we tested ourselves and I believe we’re in a good position going into Sunday.

“We are raring to go, especially being at the stadium. We know Oxford are going to be a top side and we know they’ll be motivated going into this season. It should be an exciting occasion and we’re looking forward to it.”

TEAM NEWS
MK Dons made it through pre-season unscathed so Head Coach Charlie Bill has a full squad to pick from this weekend.

He could decide to hand debuts to summer signings Megan Attenborough, Catherine Beaver Macey Herd, the latter of which joined the Club from Arsenal at the start of the week. Lucy Wood may also be involved after moving to MK Dons on a permanent basis this summer.

ELSEWHERE IN THE FAWNL SOUTHERN PREMIER DIVISION

Chatham Town v Hashtag United, 2.30pm
Plymouth Argyle v Billericay Town, 2.45pm

Report: MK Dons Women 2-2 Oxford United

MK Dons Women rescue a point in their opening game of the season…

22 August 2023

MK Dons Women produce late drama to earn a point in their opening FAWNL game of the season against Oxford United.

After the pre-season preparations concluded, Charlie Bill’s Women sought to start strong within the league in the aim to build on the successes of last season.

In the goal to achieve another top-five finish or to yet improve on last year’s standings, the first hurdle provided a test against Oxford United at Stadium MK. A team that placed within the top three of the league table during the previous campaign.

Oxford had capitalised on the home side’s slow start within the first 45 minutes of action, which saw the U’s successful in their strikes on the 14 and 26-minute marks. 0-2

The teams entered the break whilst the Dons suffered a two-goal deficit, but a positive response in the second-half rewarded Charlie Bill’s Women.

Soon after the restart, MK Dons had narrowed the score-line through Laura Mitchell’s headed attempt which flew past the Oxford goalkeeper. 1-2

The hosts sought to build on the momentum gained from the first goal scored in the 2023/24 campaign, and their efforts until the end proved vital to the result.

A few attempts following Mitchell’s goal were denied by the woodwork, but that didn’t dishearten the Stadium MK side.

In the dying moments of the game, MK Dons had found their equaliser in dramatic fashion. A well-delivered free-kick located the back post, which caused panic for the travelling team, who were unable to clear the danger.

This allowed Emily Wilson to punish in the goal-line scramble as her decisive touch found the back of the net to level the score-line in the 90+7 minute of the match. 2-2

This dramatic end to the opening fixture produced a 2-2 score-line and both teams left Stadium MK with the points shared between them.blobid0.jpg
