MK Dons Women progress to the Preliminary round after Amy McLean’s goal decided the match in a 1-0 victory over Chichester & Selsey, within the FA WNL Cup competition.
MK Dons started the game well and progressed into Selsey’s final-third many times, which created multiple chances for the travelling team.
After 20 minutes, Lucy Wood crafted the best oppurtunity of the game. The number 11 placed herself on the edge of the area before she unleashed a shot that curled towards the top-right corner. The Selsey keeper matched the strike with an incredible save to ensure that the game stayed level.
The home side continued their tight-knit defending, which saw the first-half goalless as the referee signalled for the break.
Six minutes after the break, the Dons’ resilience allowed them to take the lead through Amy McLean.
Mollie Coupar located Nicola Puddick, who fired the ball across goal. McLean positioned herself brilliantly in the box, which rewarded the number 21 with an easy tap-in finish.
Five minutes after the opener, Charlie Bill’s Women searched to double their advantage. Emma Biggadike’s header was tipped over the bar by the Chichester keeper, who displayed a strong performance.
MK Dons still desired a second goal, but the home side’s defence continued to stand strong and prevent the Dons’ chances from increasing their lead.
Although Chichester increased their tempo within the final stages of the game, McLean’s goal early in the second-half decided the match in favour of MK Dons, who claimed a 1-0 victory.
This result rewarded Charlie Bill’s Women with a place in the Preliminary round of the FA WNL Cup, the draw for the next round is yet to be announced.
