Report: MK Dons Women 3-1 Crawley Wasps

A triplet of victories for the Dons Women during a new record attendance…

14 March 2023

Charlie Bill’s Women secured their third straight league victory over Crawley Wasps at Stadium MK in front of a new record attendance.

Prior to this fixture, MK Dons sat sixth level on points with Gillingham, who sought to replace the Dons within the league table. However, Sunday’s success has furthered the gap between to the two teams to three points.

Charlie Bill made two changes to his previous winning XI that claimed a 2-0 victory over London Bees at the Hive Stadium. Emily Wilson made her first start for the Dons in place of Sofia Stovold, Tally Miles was also reintroduced into the starting line-up after she swapped places with Tilly Brown.

Another impressive milestone was reached this weekend as Angelina Nixon supplied her 15 assist of the season so far. An incredible achievement was only complimented by a goal from the number seven, as well as a victory at home.

Not only that, but MK Dons Women also set a new milestone with an incredible record attendance set as many fans showed their support for the team in their 3-1 victory over the Wasps.

FIRST HALF

The start of the fixture saw a set-back which had the home side caught by surprise. Within the first four minutes of the beginning whistle, Crawley Wasps had scored the opener. 0-1

Although caught off guard, this hindrance only seemed to motivate Charlie Bill’s Women more as they searched for an equaliser, which was then followed by a swift response.

Three minutes following the first goal, MK Dons had levelled the score-line. Angelina Nixon had cut inside to allow herself enough space for an opportunity at goal, but her shot was met by the Wasps’ goalkeeper. The power on the strike forced the shot to be parried away, only for it to locate Mollie Coupar, who was lurking at the back-post to score goal number 21 within her current campaign. 1-1

Nixon and Coupar, who currently set the highest goal contributions within the squad linked up again moments later, although, their efforts were snubbed at this time of asking.

Although she had already contributed her 15 assist of the season, which is the highest playmaking statistic out of her team, Nixon wasn’t satisfied. A corner floated in by Tricia Gould located the head of the midfielder, who helped guide the ball into the back-post to gain the advantage on the 19-minute mark. 2-1

This also allowed Angelina to overtake Mollie Coupar in goal contributions made, Nixon has provided a total of 24 contributions whilst Coupar is close behind with 23.

MK Dons’ momentum peaked having gained the lead for the first time in the match, as well as having the support from the record attendance home crowd. This led to a plethora of chances which could have doubled the lead if not for the heroic efforts of Crawley’s defending.

The referee signalled for half time and Charlie Bill’s Women held the advantage with 45 minutes remaining on the stopwatch.

SECOND HALF
After the teams emerged from the interval, the Dons had an ideal start to the second stage of the match, which replicated that of Crawley Wasps’ opener earlier within the fixture.

Six minutes after the break, Laura Mitchell doubled the home side’s advantage with a close-range effort following Gould’s second assist of the game. The number 14 located Mitchell in the area, from there, the composure to craft a swift touch and finish had beaten the Wasps’ defensive efforts. 3-1

A minute before the hour-mark, Chloe Sansom had to make a fantastic stop, which prevented the travelling team from pulling their way back into the fray. A brilliant save crafted from the number one was greatly appreciated by the 1,186 home fans within Stadium MK.

Layla O’Brien made her MK Dons Womens debut as she took to the field in place of Tricia Gould on the 67-minute mark.

During the final 30 minutes of the game, MK Dons saw out the remainder of the match and sustained their two-goal lead over Crawley Wasps to receive the three points they aimed for.

An impressive victory was only made more remarkable by the exceptional support MK Dons Women received with a new record attendance recorded whilst at Stadium MK.

Every fan played their part as they aided the Dons to their third consecutive FAWNL Southern Premier Division league victory.
