Ladies eye a seventh straight win

MK Dons Ladies face Denham United looking to extend their impressive run...

14 October 2017

James Honeyman believes MK Dons Ladies can make it seven wins in a row against Denham United, but knows there are no easy games.

The Dons travel to The Den to face Denham this Sunday in a FAWPL South East Division One fixture – kick-off 2pm.

Speaking about the match, Honeyman said: “We are confident we can beat anyone but we will need to be at our best to win because in this league there are no easy games.

“We believe we can win the game but we are fully aware of the dangers Denham possess.

The two sides have already met this season in the league, playing at Willen Road on the opening day of the season. The points were shared on that occasion, with the game ending in a 1-1 draw despite Kerry Newman putting the Dons ahead early on.

Since their draw on opening day the Dons have lost to AFC Wimbledon twice, but they now find themselves having won their last six games in a row across all competitions. The recent improvement in form has positioned the Dons fourth in the table, only two points off the league-leaders.

Denham go into this game having not won any of their last four games across all competitions. They currently find themselves in 10th, 10 points behind the Dons ahead of their clash having taken just six points from seven games .

Despite the pre-game form favouring the Dons, Honeyman is cautious of his team being over confident.

He said: “We are happy to have won six in a row but we only sit fourth in the table.

“We cannot get caught being over confident, because when the whistle goes before a game, everything that’s happened before that point is irrelevant.”

Ladies held to draw by Denham

Alice Hughes nets in 1-1 draw for MK Dons Ladies...

18 October 2017

Alice Hughes rescued a point for MK Dons Ladies against Denham United as the two sides drew 1-1 for the second time this season.

Alissa Down had put Denham ahead on the 17th minute, after she scored a terrific free-kick.

The hosts held on to their lead until the 74th minute, despite the Dons going close before that, with attempts even striking the woodwork on multiple occasions.

With 16 minutes left on the clock, set-piece specialist Charly Wright whipped in an inch-perfect corner, which Hughes headed home to make the scores level.

The sides could not be separated in the final minutes of the game, with both having to settle for sharing the points.

The draw ended the Dons’ six game winning streak, however the point moved them up into second place in the league.

Speaking after the game, assistant coach Charlie Bill believes his side can hold their heads high after their second half performance.

He said:”I felt our performance was a tale of two halves – we started slow and were poor in possession, going a goal down inside the first 20 minutes but in the second half, the team bounced back fantastically well, showing quality in possession, improving our tempo of play, and deservedly got the equaliser.

“We should have taken all three points but the Ladies can hold their heads high after the second half.”

Despite the positives, Bill is aware of what his side needs to do in order to improve.

“We need to start putting a whole performance together, though today we showed once again our good team spirit and resilience.”

After drawing both their league encounters 1-1, a winner will have to be found next Sunday when the two sides meet again, at Willen Road, in the FA WPL Plate competition.

Starting XI: Smith, Burgess, Holland, Newsome, Wright, Doyle (c) (Goodier 65), Clarke, Hughes, Mallett (Gooderham 85), Hazard (Newman 75), Mills.

Unused subs: Payne, Naylor

Goal: Hughes (74)

Attendance: 87
