Ladies set for U's test

James Honeyman's side travel to Cambridge United this evening...

11 October 2017

James Honeyman is expecting a tough game when MK Dons Ladies travel to face Cambridge United this evening.

The Dons travel to Mildenhall Town to play the U’s in a FAWPL South East Division One fixture – kick-off 7:45pm.

Honeyman spoke about how MK Dons Ladies are in good form, but made it known his side are aware of their tough opposition.

He said: “We know it’s going to be a tough game but we’re positive and we’re looking forward to it. We’ve won five in a row so we’ve given ourselves the best chance to win that game.

“It will be a very tough game – they’re a very good side but we’re a very good side and there will be very good football played with both sides trying to win.”

Both teams go into this game on the back of a successful outing in the third qualifying round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup. The U’s currently find themselves three points behind the Dons in the league, having also played a game less.

The Dons, who are currently in fourth, know that a win would put them on level points with current league leaders Ipswich Town. However, if AFC Wimbledon win their mid-week fixture they would go top, two points clear of the Dons even if they are victorious.

The U’s and the Dons have already played each other once this season, having met at Willen Road at the end of September. The Dons came out of the game with victory thanks to a last minute goal from Alice Hughes, after a battling performance from both sides.

Laura Mills featured as a sub in that game, but has since started the last two games for the Dons scoring two goals. Mills is hoping to continue her impressive start to the side, and spoke of how quickly she’s settled at the Dons.

She said: “I do believe I’ve settled quickly. I think they’re a fantastic bunch of girls and I’m really happy to be a part of this team.

“Hopefully, I can go on and improve and make it three in three on Wednesday.”

Ladies pick up impressive U's win

Goals from Alice Hughes and Laura Mills inspire succe

12 October 2017

Laura Mills continued her good form, grabbing her third goal in three games, to help MK Dons Ladies defeat Cambridge United.

Alice Hughes put the Dons ahead 18 minutes into the game, when she rose highest to head home. Charly Wright had whipped in a free-kick from the right-hand side of the pitch, 15-yards outside the box, and Hughes managed to get up and head the ball into the top left corner.

The Dons then controlled the game, resulting in Cambridge having no clear-cut chances on goal.

With just over half an hour to play, Mills was presented with an opportunity at goal after Amelia Hazard fed her the ball – Hazard had created the space for the pass after charging forward in possession from the halfway line. Mills took one touch towards the goal, before firing the ball across the goalkeeper to double the Dons’ lead.

The three points earned against Cambridge sees the Dons sit fourth in the FAWPL South East Division One table, two points behind league-leaders AFC Wimbledon.

Speaking after the game, James Honeyman spoke of his delight about the result, saying: “I’m very proud of the team today. We knew it would be tough but we dominated the game from start to finish.”

Honeyman continued, highlighting his team’s defensive strength in the game when it came to playing a tough opposition like Cambridge.

He said: “We executed our game plan perfectly, controlled the game, and showed our resilient and ruthless side. To limit a team like Cambridge to not one single chance shows how well we executed the game plan.”

The Dons will look to make it seven wins in a row when they travel to face Denham United this Sunday.

Starting XI: Smith, Doyle (c), Burgess, Holland, Newsome, Wright, Hughes (Gillings 70), Clarke, Hazard (Goodier 65), Mallett (Newman 75), Mills.

Goals: Hughes (18), Mills (52).

Attendance: 85
