The midfielder was on the books with Arsenal as a schoolboy but opted to switch to Aston Villa in 2009 and subsequently signed professional terms with the West Midland side.
He made his senior debut during the 2011/12 campaign and was part of the Villa Under-19s side that won the NextGen Series title. He also earned himself caps at Under-19 and Under-21 level for Republic of Ireland.
After finding first-team opportunities limited at Villa Park, Carruthers moved to Milton Keynes on a six-month loan deal in August 2013, one which was later extended for the remainder of the season.
Carruthers clearly did enough in his 28 appearances to persuade the Dons to sign him on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee at the start of the 2014/15 season and he featured 38 times for the Dons during that promotion-winning campaign.
After featuring 43 times for the men from MK1 in the Championship last season, he’ll be looking to help the team do all they can to return to the second tier in the final year of his contract.
