MK Dons will take on Premier League opposition in the third round of the Carling Cup, after being handed a trip to Birmingham City in Saturday's draw.

Karl Robinson's men were the twentieth team out of the hat on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday programme, paired with Alex McLeish's Blues after knocking out Blackpool in round two.

The tie at St Andrews will take place week commencing 20th September, with full details and ticket information to be confirmed in the coming days.

The Dons have recent experience of facing McLeish's men, having hosted the Blues an entertaining pre-season friendly at stadiummk earlier this month. The Dons raced into a 2-0 lead on that occasion thanks to Jermaine Easter's penalty and a second from Jabo Ibehre, only for Cameron Jerome's double and Garry O'Connor's deflected strike to give Birmingham the win.

But having pushed the Midlands outfit all the way that night and dumped out Premier League opposition in the previous round, the Dons will fancy their chances of an upset at St Andrews.

Finalised dates and ticket information will appear first on mkdons.com, so stay logged on for the latest details.

Elsewhere in the draw, League 2 Northampton were handed a mouth-watering trip to Liverpool while Championship Scunthorpe host Manchester United.
