Dons manager Karl Robinson will speak to forward Jemal Johnson this week with a view to sorting out the American's future.
Johnson is due to report for training at stadiummk on Friday following unsuccessful trial periods in the States with MLS sides DC United and Kansas City Wizards.
The 24-year-old striker, who spent most of last season on loan with Stockport County, was given permission to find a new club after Robinson confirmed he would not be part of his plans for the new campaign.
And following Johnson's return to the UK this week, the Dons boss will now discuss the next step with the former Blackburn and Wolves striker.
Robinson told the media on Thursday: "JJ's in for training tomorrow. I need to have a chat with him and we'll see where we go from there.
"The Club needs to bridge a gap with its budgets - it's just what every club needs to do - and JJ maybe wants to play his football somewhere else."
Johnson has one year remaining on his Dons contract after rejoining the Club a year ago, having briefly departed stadiummk upon the expiration of his previous deal that summer.
The New Jersey-born striker has made 103 appearances for the Dons in all competitions.
