GOBERN EYEING BROTHERLY BATTLE

Posted on: Tue 27 Oct 2009

Southampton v MK Dons

As Aaron Wilbraham capped the Citizen Family Fun Day with the clinching second goal in last week's 2-0 win over Gillingham, one family in particular had good reason to celebrate.

With older brother Lewis having entered the fray early in the second half, young Oscar Gobern joined his senior sibling for the first time on a professional pitch as a stoppage time replacement for Peter Leven.

But having returned to parent club Southampton at the end of his month-long loan in Milton Keynes, Oscar could find himself up against his big brother this weekend as the Dons and the Saints go head to head at St Mary's.

It's arguably the game of the weekend in League 1, with both sides going into the game in great form having won their last four games respectively.

And 24-year-old Lewis admits that, while he would love to see 18-year-old Oscar break into the Saints first team, helping the Dons to a fifth straight victory will be his priority.

He told mkdons.com: "I spoke to Oscar the other day and it will be good to see him on Saturday. If he's involved then obviously I want him to do well, but we need to win so hopefully we can get the three points.

"It's a strange situation because I'd never played with Oscar at professional level before so it was great to see him come on and for both of us to be on the pitch at the same time last Saturday.

Oscar could be in Southampton colours this weekend as the Dons head to St Mary's.

"But this weekend we could be on opposite sides. Hopefully he'll be involved for Southampton, but who knows. We've always been very competitive, it's that brotherly thing, but we both want see each other do well too.

"He made a big impression while he was here, I think the manager thought so as well. I know he didn't play too much, but it's hard when you're trying to get into a winning team when you come in on loan.

"Hopefully he can take what he's learnt here and carry it on at Southampton or wherever he might go in his career. Hopefully he can keep getting better and keep improving."

After missing the previous four games with a hamstring injury, Lewis made an impressive return to action in the win over Gillingham, coming on early in the second half to terrorise the Gills defence with his trademark pace and trickery.

And as he looks to continue his involvement at Southampton this weekend, the former Wolves wide-man hopes he can put his injury troubles behind him and continue to dazzle the Dons faithful.

He said: "I feel good at the moment, hopefully now the injuries are behind me because I've had three or four weeks out with little niggles here and there. Now I'd like to kick on, stay involved, stay fit and do as well as I can.

"You have to show people what you can do when you get the opportunity. I believe in my ability, I know what I can do, I just need to try to stay on the pitch, stay fit and keep trying to push on and get better.

"There are so many different formations the manager can play and so many good players for him to choose from, but that's the sign of a good team.

"It keeps competition for places high and makes everyone perform at their best to stay in the team. If you're doing well, you'll play."
