SAM SETS SIGHTS ON GHANA

Posted on: Fri 02 Oct 2009

Dons striker Sam Baldock had to take a patient watching brief in England's first outing at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Egypt this weekend.

The 20-year-old Dons starlet was an unused substitute for Brian Eastick's side as they suffered an opening 1-0 defeat at the hands of Uruguay in Ismailia.

But with Tuesday's Group D game against Ghana right around the corner, the next chance to impress is already upon England's youngsters as they look to progress in the competition.

The Three Lions will once again play in the 18,000-capacity Ismailia Stadium as they take on the Black Stars, who saw off Uzbekistan 2-1 in their opening game, and Baldock is hoping to get a taste of the action.

He told mkdons.com: "We were unfortunate not to take at least a point from the opening game, the lads played well for long periods and it was a fantastic goal that won it.

"But everyone's feeling good about tomorrow night. The group has gelled very quickly and we're hoping to build on the positives against Ghana.

"I'm not sure at the moment what my role is going to be, but hopefully I can get some time on the pitch, it'd be great to be involved."

The tournament has been big news in Egypt, with 74,000 turning out to watch the hosts kick off the competition against Trinidad and Tobago in Alexandria last week.

And having travelled through the streets to get to games and training venues, Sam says it's obvious what the tournament means to the local communities.

He said: "We were travelling to a training session when that Egypt game was going on. For there to be nearly 80,000 people there cheering them on just brought into perspective how big this is.

"When you're going through the streets you can see people crowding around televisions in bars and cafes and everywhere we go there have been banners to welcome the competing nations. It's a really big deal for the people out here.

"I think all the lads have had a taste now of how prestigious the competition is and it's just strengthened our resolve to progress as far as we can."

England's Group D clash with Ghana on Tuesday night will be shown live on Eurosport, kick-off 8.30pm BST.
