CRYSTAL PALACE U18 2 MK DONS U18 2

Posted on: Mon 14 Sep 2009

MK Dons Under 18s twice came from behind at Crystal Palace to take a point from their latest Premier Academy League fixture.

Second-year apprentices Adam Chicksen and Martel Powell were both on target as Mike Dove's side recovered from their home defeat against Huddersfield to produce a much-improved performance in south London.

Playing some creative attacking football and looking dangerous on the counter-attack, the Dons came away with a lot of credit from Saturday's game, with Academy Director Mike Dove encouraged by their progress.

"We lacked a bit of concentration at times, but on the whole it was very encouraging," Mike said.

"We've got a very attack-minded team so we will always create chances, but we need to show a little more composure in front of goal and be clinical enough to take the chances when they present themselves.

"We scored two goals from set-pieces on Saturday, which is something we have worked hard to be creative with so that was pleasing. We just need to make sure we're switched on in defensive situations."

Academy Director Mike Dove was encouraged by the Under-18s' display at Crystal Palace.

Despite a bright start that saw Powell and Charlie Collins go close for the Dons, Palace took the lead when a lack of concentration in defence allowed a low corner to be tapped in by an unmarked forward.

But the visitors responded well with Collins, Chicksen and Powell all getting sights of goal before Chicksen squared things up with a stinging 18-yard drive.

Palace regained the lead shortly after half-time when a break down the right caught the Dons outnumbered at the back and an advancing midfield found space in the box to score.

A tactical change to a midfield diamond paid dividends for the Dons as Palace started to become stretched in their defensive third and after Collins had seen an effort come back off the post, Powell rose highest to head home Chicksen's free-kick with six minutes to go.

"We deserved at least a draw out of the game," Mike added. "We showed plenty of creativity and had enough chances to justify that."
