MK DONS U18 0 HUDDERSFIELD U18 2

Posted on: Thu 03 Sep 2009

Mike Dove's Under-18s succumbed to a 2-0 home defeat against Huddersfield Town on Friday in their first home game of the Premier Academy League season.

A goal in each half from a well-organised Terriers outfit was enough to see off the Dons youngsters, who will be disappointed not to have built on a good point at Stoke City last week.

Though Martel Powell and Justin Dowling both hit the woodwork in the first period, the home side were unable to seize the initiative after the break, to Mike's immense disappointment.

"I'm frustrated because we're better than we showed today," Mike said. "Huddersfield were well set up and they had some big, strong players in their side, but if we'd played to our potential things might have been different.

"Their manager felt we were the better side, he told me as such after the game, but we didn't play to the tempo and standards that we expect."

The Terriers were certainly quicker out of the traps, forcing the issue in the opening stages and taking the lead on 19 minutes when the impressive Aiden Chippendale cut in from the right flank to guide the ball past Daniel Glass in the Dons goal.

The visitors should have doubled the lead nine minutes later when James Spencer was able to navigate his way through a re-organised Dons defence, but poked his shot wide with just Glass to beat.

But the home side began to show signs of improvement and went within a whisker of drawing level on 38 minutes when Charlie Collins floated a terrific cross in from the right and Powell's downward header bounced off the inside of the post and away to safety.

It seemed to spark the Dons into life and when Adam Chicksen made good progress down the right flank, his near post delivery was headed against the outside of the upright by the arriving Dowling.

Mike's youngsters looked set to continue their momentum after the break when a slick passing move finished with Troy Farden's attempted chip being tipped just over the bar.

But the wind was taken out of their sails when Huddersfield hit them for a second on the break. Adam Bower made an excellent surge into the Dons box from the left and when his effort was parried by Glass, substitute Stephen Powell was able to turn the rebound home.

It was a tough blow for the home side to take, but they rallied towards the end and nearly pulled a goal back with 17 minutes to go. Chicksen's quick free-kick found Powell down the right and when his cross caused problems in the Huddersfield area, Harry Milton smashed just past the far post from eight yards.

Dons: Glass, Chicksen, Ivy-Ward (Trialist 65), Milton, McGovern, Coronado, Farden (Ahmed 81), Dowling (Lee 65), Browne, M. Powell, Collins.
