A dominant performance from England saw Stuart Pearce's side put on a great show for over 12,000 fans at stadiummk and comfortably beat Azerbaijan by seven goals to nil.

Two goals for Kieran Gibbs, in addition to strikes from Michael Mancienne, Mark Noble, Craig Gardner, Lee Cattermole and Jack Rodwell, saw the hosts complete their preparations for the UEFA European Championships in perfect style.

Any dreams the visitors had of keeping the Young Lions at bay were shattered with forty seconds of the start when Chelsea defender Mancienne lashed the ball home after the Azeri failed to clear the first corner of the match.

From there on in, England were in total control of the match, keeping the ball for long periods of the game and it came as little surprise when captain Noble doubled the hosts' lead on 26 minutes, albeit via a fortunate deflection off the post and the visiting 'keeper, paving the way for Gardner to make it three five minutes later as he smashed the ball home on the angle.

After the break, Pearce tinkered with his side's shape and system, with many players playing out of position - most notably Peterborough 'keeper Joe Lewis, who did a sturdy job at centre-forward.

But despite shuffling the pack, England continued to hold the aces, demonstrating their strength when Cattermole finished from a tight angle on 55 minutes to make it four.

Within fifteen minutes of the fourth, Gibbs stamped his authority on the match, linking up twice with impressive substitute Danny Rose to score on the 64th and 70th minutes.

And with the game firmly won, it was left to Rodwell to complete the scoring as his left foot shot from distance deflected off an unfortunate Azeri defender and into the net.

All in all, it was probably a much more comfortable win than perhaps England had expected, with the game effectively won and over at half time.

That said, the scoreline - and the manner of victory - will no doubt give Pearce's side a big lift before jetting off to Sweden on Thursday for the European Championships.

And with his side's first game of those Championships against Finland just seven days away, Head Coach Pearce can certainly be confident that his team are in with a chance.

Speaking after the match, he said: "We have to push and test ourselves, but we have a competitive squad here.

"I think all the players have pushed their way into my plans more. We had one or two youngsters in there and they are all putting me under pressure."

One man clearly delighted with the evening's events was MK Dons Chairman Pete Winkelman.

He said: "Tonight was everything we could have hoped for.

"A record victory at stadiummk to accompany an excellent performance from England throughout, that will have thoroughly entertained the crowd of over 12,000."

In particular, Pete took great delight in seeing Arsenal starlet Gibbs stealing the headlines with two goals and Man of the Match winning performance.

Pete continued: "It was brilliant to see Kieran in such good form tonight.

"He was, of course, a graduate of the Wimbledon Academy before moving on to Arsenal, so to see him come here to our home in Milton Keynes and put in such a strong display was a personal highlight for me."
