ALI AND LEWIE IN TEAM OF THE WEEK

Posted on: Tue 24 Feb 2009

Dons goal-scorers Dean Lewington and Ali Gerba have both been named in the Coca-Cola League 1 Team of the Week following Saturday's win over Hartlepool.

The Dons duo were in terrific form at the weekend and helped ensure a third straight win for Roberto Di Matteo's second-placed side, who gave them selves some valuable breathing space in the race for promotion.

Canadian international Gerba again showed his predatory instincts with two poacher's goals against the 'Pools, taking his impressive stadiummk tally to six goals in six starts since joining the Dons last summer. He struck first on 37 minutes to cancel out Rune Lange's opener and again in stoppage time from Tore Andre Flo's cutback.

Skipper Lewington was in typically bullish form at full-back, defending stoutly and starting a string of attacks in tandem with the in-form Jemal Johnson down the left flank. The Dons captain capped a brilliant performance by giving the Dons the lead with the crucial second goal four minutes from time.

The pair are joined in this week's team by former Dons striker Izale McLeod, who scored two goals for Millwall, where he is currently on loan from Charlton Atheltic.

Coca-Cola League 1 Team of the Week: Alex Smithies (Huddersfield Town), Stephen Purches (Leyton Orient), Nathan Clarke (Huddersfield Town), Richard Keogh (Carlisle United), Dean Lewington (MK Dons), Shaun MacDonald (Yeovil Town), Sam Hewson (Hereford United), Andy King (Leicester City), Joe Anyinsah (Carlisle United), Ali Gerba (MK Dons), Izale McLeod (Millwall).
