MIKEY'S MIDWEEK VIEW 12.11.08

This week I've decided to be daring and put across an opinion that may not be very popular . . . I'm not really bothered by the FA Cup.
Sure there've been some great finals through the years, but mostly in my living memory "the greatest cup competition" as they like to bill it has been dull.
Last season everyone said how great it was little Barnsley made the semis, how wonderful Cardiff were in the final against Portsmouth, wonderful for them maybe, boring for the rest of us.
The last time I was really on the edge of my seat for an FA Cup game was the 1999 semi final replay between Manchester United and Arsenal. That game was brilliant, a penalty save followed by one of the greatest goals of all time by hairy-chested Ryan Giggs.
So in all honesty I'm not too fussed about bowing out early against Bradford. Once the initial disappointment of defeat had faded I turned to that fateful old adage that always serves teams well.
"We'll concentrate on the league"
Too right we should, the odd glamour game against a big team in Round Three is very nice, but I'm sure we all share a dream in which we're playing those sides every week.
The truth is, even at this early stage of the season, we're in a promotion race. To stay in it we need as few distractions as possible.
The prize of promotion to the Championship is far greater than a home tie against the likes of Middlesborough, it's taking the Club to new level. Just think what the place would be like if we achieved back-to-back promotions.
As I said last week we have a really good manager, with some super players and, whilst we don't want to get carried away, there is a shared ambition that drives everyone around the Milton Keynes Dons.
So the "Road to Wembley" was short again for us this year, the road to Hartlepool is more than long enough, and then there's the path to Walsall, thank goodness we don't have a replay trip to Bradford sandwiched in-between.
As Bruce Forsyth used to say "Points mean Prizes" and that'll do for me.
