FULL-TIME - MK DONS 0 BOURNEMOUTH 1
Ten-man MK Dons lose the grip on the Johnstone's Paint Trophy as Bournemouth progress to round three at stadiummk.
A much-changed Dons lineup looked in the driving seat for most of the first half but the game was turned on its head when their French midfielder Flavien Belson was sent off for a challenge on Cherries striker Brett Pitman.
From there the holders would always have their work cut out though they should have taken the lead on 69 minutes when Kevin Gallen met Florian Sturm's cross only to see Cherries 'keeper Shwan Jalal pull off a world-class save.
Bournemouth, having enjoyed more possession in the second half and having seen Darren Anderton hit the crossbar moments before, struck the decisive blow on 77 minutes when Danny Hollands' long-range shot was diverted past Nathan Abbey by Anderton's outstretched leg.
A late rally couldn't help the Dons force their way back into it and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy will have another team's ribbons on it in 2009.
90mins - Three minutes to be added on at the end of the game but the Dons need the ball first and Bournemouth are making them chase it.
89mins - Johnson wins a corner down the right which Lewington whips to the near post but it's bravely headed away by a Bournemouth defender. Time running out.
87mins - Dons again try to build down the left with Lewington and Chicksen but the latter turns down the chance to cross with too few players in the area. Instead it's worked infield to Chadwick whose low shot from 20 yards is well held by Jalal.
84mins - Huge shout for handball as Johnson tries to juggle the ball past Pearce in the Bournemouth area. Referee looks to his assistant who fails to signal and play goes on.
83mins - Chicksen returns to the action with a clean, numberless shirt. His first one must have been sporting some blood on it. Dons trying to mount some pressure but are struggling to put enough numbers in the box.
81mins - Great turn from Johnson on Cummings down the Dons right and the Bournemouth defender simply shoves him to the ground. Booking.
79mins - Treatment required for young Chicksen, who catches an arm in the face from Guyett as he tried to get on the end of a cross from Regan from the right.
77mins - GOAL! MK DONS 0 BOURNEMOUTH 1 - DARREN ANDERTON
Disaster for the home side as Hollands takes aim from 25 yards with an angled drive from the left, it flies low through the area and hits the outstretched leg of Anderton to wrongfoot Abbey and nestle in the back of the net. The holders are on the brink of elimination.
75mins - What a strike from Anderton! The former England man hits a right-footed shot from fully 40 yards that cracks off the top of Abbey's crossbar.
73mins - Quite how the Dons have kept that out Clockwatch will never know! Cummings swings a corner to the far post from the right, Hollands meets it with a downward header and a goalmouth scramble follows. There's bodies flying everywhere and first Pitman and then Cooper try to scramble it over the line but the Dons somehow manage to clear.
71mins - Well when you've got 10 men you just hope for a chance to come along and that was it for the Dons. Great ball from Navarro out to Sturm in the first place and the cross was aimed perfectly for Gallen. Super stop from the goalkeeper, you have to give him credit.
70mins - A change a piece as Sturm is replaced by young Adam Chicksen and Bournemouth replace Sturrock with Josh McQuoid.
69mins - What a save from Jalal! The Dons should be in front but Gallen, climbing to meet Sturm's cross from the left sees his header clawed out of the corner by the Cherries 'keeper. Fantastic stop.
68mins - Anderton plays the ball over the top down the Bournemouth left and the flag stays down against Pitman but Llera comes across with a very good challenge to clear the ball to safety.
67mins - Bournemouth still holding onto possession for the most part but not creating as they previously were. Dons just trying to get a foothold before perhaps a late surge.
63mins - Nothing doing for Sturm as he goes down under Bradbury's challenge on the left-hand side. Remember this will go straight to penalties if it's level after 90 minutes . . .
59mins - Bournemouth want a penalty this time as Bradbury's diagonal from the right finds Pitman in the penalty area. He pulls the ball down on his chest but Regan puts him under pressure and prevents him getting a meaningful shot in. Pitman feels Regan was fouling him as they ran towards goal.
58mins - Another half chance for the visitors as Anderton shows good feet to pull a cross back from the right of the penalty area, Pitman improvises with a backheel but it's wide of the post from six yards.
57mins - Dons showing some nice touches in possession when they've got it but they can't keep it for long enough to inflict any damage. Lewington plays a lovely one-two with Sturm down the left but his cross towards Gallen is seen off by Cooper in the Cherries defence.
54mins - The visitors are enjoying a lot more possession now with the extra man and the Dons are the side covering the ground. Bartley's cross from the right is met by the diving Pitman but he's going away from goal and directs his header wide.
52mins - Cummings charges forward with the Dons having committed men forward and feeds Pitman to his right. Pitman heads for the penalty area but his low angled shot is easily saved by Abbey.
51mins - Johnson is fouled in full flight by Hollands and the crowd predictably call for a red card. Now that would have been harsh.
50mins - Well what a start to the half an it's stunned stadiummk. Pitman is up and back on the field and the Dons have reshuffled with Johnson coming to wide right and Chadwick moving into the middle of the park with Navarro. The holders have their work cut out now.
46mins - RED CARD
Flavien Belson is shown a straight red card for a challenge on Pitman down the Dons right on halfway. Anthony Taylor has been pretty trigger happy with the cards so far and Dons players look hugely surprised. Belson hasn't even realised as he checks on Pitman, seemingly genuinely concerned, but looks up to see he's heading for the showers.
46mins - Two changes for the Dons at the break as Miguel Llera and Luke Chadwick come on for O'Hanlon and Wright. It's a home debut for Chadwick.
8.51 - SECOND HALF KICKS OFF
HALF-TIME - MK DONS 0 BOURNEMOUTH 0
An average half of football it has to be said with neither side able to find much attacking rhythm.
Chances have been in very short supply with the visitors packing their defence and putting the Dons under pressure in possession. The much-changed home side have yet to find the groove and subsequent momentum.
Florian Sturm worked Cherries 'keeper Shwan Jalal with a decent strike from the edge of the box after breaking onto a Jemal Johnson pass and the Austrian has been well-supported by Dean Lewington down the left.
In for the rested Peter Leven, Flavien Belson has tried to inject some drive into the game and managed to set up Kevin Gallen early on only for the Dons striker to slice his shot wide.
Bournemouth's best opening came the way of Marvin Bartley, who was denied by a sliding Nathan Abbey as he raced in on the Dons goal.
Sturm again went close just before the break when he seized on Jason Pearce's poor defensive header but lifted his shot over under pressure from Jalal.
45+3mins - A chance out of nothing for Sturm as Lewington's cross from the left is headed back across his own goal by Pearce and the Austrian just beats Jalal in a race to the ball. Sturm manages to lift it over the 'keeper but beats the crossbar.
45mins - It's been a Bournemouth ploy so far to put plenty of pressure on Navarro when the Dons man receives the ball in the middle of the park and the one time they fail to do it you can see why they're targeting him. Navarro picks out Wright with a good ball into feet right of centre but the winger's shot from 25 yards is ambitious and sliced well wide.
43mins - Cowshed trying to rally the troops for a moment as a Bradbury-Lewington coming together sees the Dons defender skidding on his studs on the concrete surface around the pitch and nearly into the Family Section of the ground. Mark Wright carries the ball forward down the right before trying his luck from range. Jalal spills it but gathers at the second attempt.
40mins - Booking number four for the half as Bradbury checks Lewington to prevent him running onto Sturm's return ball down the left.
37mins - Two bookings in as many minutes, one for each side. Gallen loses possession in the Bournemouth half before sliding in late on Blair Sturrock then Pitman goes over the top on Belson at the other end. Both shown yellows.
35mins - Brilliant piece of goalkeeping by Abbey prevents Bartley surely giving Bournemouth the lead. Navarro is caught in possession in the centre circle by Pitman and he slides the ball in behind for the onrushing Bartley but Abbey is out quickly to save at his feet near the edge of the box.
33mins - Completely needless foul from Guyett on Gallen down the Dons left. Belson slides a ball too far down the flank for Gallen to reach but Guyett, rather than simply cut the ball out, goes over it and takes Gallen into touch. Free-kick taken by Lewington and pulled back for Sturm on the edge of the area but he's crowded out.
29mins - You're not likely to see a more obvious booking than what Bartley has just committed on Wright. Dons clear a Bournemouth corner and Wright catches the ball on his chest just outside his own area before spinning past Bartley. The Bournemouth man pulls Wright back by the neck to prevent a dangerous counter attack and nobody is surprised to see a card.
27mins - Johnson is caught from behind by Pearce halfway inside the Bournemouth half and the Cherries defender gets a word in his ear from referee Anthony Taylor. Sturm's delivery is almost right onto the head of O'Hanlon but he's forced to duck too low for it and can't make a proper connection.
24mins - Ah Regan will be disappointed with that. He shows great feet to beat Warren Cummings down the right and give himself a good position to cross but his delivery goes straight behind for a goal-kick.
23mins - Regan's cross from the right is deflected wide for a corner, taken by Sturm but it's more floated than whipped and Belson can't get any power on his far-post header and Jalal catches.
20mins - They certainly want to pass the ball Bournemouth and with Anderton acting as the pivot that's hardly surprising. They work a nice triangle down their right flank involving Pitman, Bartley and Bradbury but when they try to work it crossfield Regan gets a foot in and Stirling clears.
18mins - Bournemouth look happy to keep their 5-3-2 shape when the Dons are in possession and there has been plenty of ball between the Dons back four in the last few minutes. They will have to be patient to break this Bournemouth side.
13mins - First change of the game as Bournemouth replace Jeff Goulding with Brett Pitman in attack. Goulding starting may have been to ensure the Cherries met their quota of regular starters for the competition, or he may well be injured we shall see.
13mins - Belson breaks up Bournemouth possession in midfield to lead a two-on-two charge. He pushes the ball right for Gallen but the striker's right-footed shot from 15 yards is sliced wide of the near post.
12mins - Great little burst from Florian Sturm as his movement opens up some space down the left for Johnson to find him. Drives past Guyett and into open grass before trying a fierce shot from 20 yards that Jalal does well to hold onto.
10mins - Nice work from the Dons as Regan and Navarro combine on the edge of the Bournemouth area only for the latter to be denied by Pearce's sliding challenge. Ball breaks to Johnson on the right and his low cross towards Gallen is cut out at the near post and cleared.
9mins - First real shot of note and it comes from Bournemouth in the shape of Marvin Bartley. Firmly-hit from 25 yards but always rising over Nathan Abbey's crossbar.
8mins - The distinctive figure of Darren Anderton is marshalling the centre of Bournemouth's midfield this evening, wearing the captain's armband. Perhaps not of the age to be bombing up and down the flank these days but will have the footballing brain to cause the Dons a few problems.
6mins - Johnson wins a corner out on the right flank, taken by Sturm to the near post and headed clear by Jason Pearce. Navarro tries to help the ball back into the box on the volley first time but it's too deep and Shwan Jalal makes a clean catch.
4mins - Quiet first few minutes as both sides get used to a slick surface after some heavy rain in Milton Keynes a couple of hours ago. As you may have seen from the team news, the Dons have made seven changes tonight with Kevin Gallen and Jemal Johnson starting in attack and both have been keen to get the ball into feet early. Florian Sturm and Mark Wright have looked to stretch the game by hugging the flanks.
7.47pm - KICK-OFF - Referee Anthony Taylor gets us underway with the Dons all in white and defending the Cowshed in the first half. Bournemouth, in red shirts, black shorts and red socks defend the end housing a handful of their supporters.
7.45pm - Welcome to stadiummk as MK Dons begin their defence of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy against a side they put out on their way to the Final last season - AFC Bournemouth. The Cherries were in League 1 and the Dons in League 2 then, the roles have been reversed now and we're expecting an interesting night's cup action.
