MIKEY'S MIDWEEK BLOG 20.08.08
Horizon Radio's Dons commentator Mikey Burrows brings us his musings for the week. You can hear Mikey's commentary every Saturday on 103.3FM or on Dons World for every single MK Dons game . . .
Those who don't have lots of free time or don't work silly shifts like me won't know this week is the last of Richard and Judy on Channel 4.
I can't say I've watched it a lot but strangely I've found myself tuning in more and more over the past few days. It seems I'm fascinated by things ending, how some things have long drawn out endings, how others seem to end quickly.
It all comes down to change, and there aren't many clubs who've been through as much change as the MK Dons, but now we seem to be at the beginning of something again, and that's exciting.
On Saturday I felt a buzz around the place again, that swagger was coming back, but this time mixed with a new Mediterranean flavour.
The swashbuckling football was plain to see, but so was the passion and desire to get stuck in and battle for the points.
Paul Mitchell loves a tackle, and sat alongside me last Saturday he became animated every time the back four thundered through a challenge, every time they committed themselves to a tackle and came away with the ball.
Yet he appreciated just as much the excellent wide play, and the intelligent forward runs. I felt as if Paul was showing the new ethos, the change, the need to balance British blood and guts with continental techniques.
I could write loads of clichés about "change is for the better" or "it doesn't happen overnight" but, as football fans, we just want to see results, the last two have been pretty good, now we've got to go away from home and face tests just as tough.
I guess what I'm really fascinated by are not endings, but beginnings. Moving on to the next chapter and not quite knowing what's coming next. For me personally this season is something very new, and I'm loving it, and I hope that comes across in the commentary.
I don't know what's going to happen this season, but that just excites me more, and I'm determined to enjoy every minute until next May.
So lets celebrate this new beginning, and welcome the change, because it's for the better and it won't happen overnight . . . oh . . . sorry.
By the way you're not missing anything with Richard and Judy. After 10 minutes of Ricky Gervais talking about aeroplanes and then a feature on using mayonnaise as a hair product, I switched off.
