FULL-TIME: MK DONS 1 NORTHAMPTON TOWN 0
MK Dons claim their first League 1 points of the season with a deserved 1-0 win over local rivals Northampton at stadiummk.
Having registered his first win as a manager with a 1-0 victory over Norwich in the Carling Cup in midweek, the same scoreline is enough to give Roberto Di Matteo a first league triumph.
Aaron Wilbraham's second-half header settled a tight game. Having sees a great headed chance saved by Mark Bunn in the first half, the Dons striker made no mistake on 66 minutes - forcing Peter Leven's corner over the line despite a desperate defensive effort.
Northampton applied the pressure late in the day, Adebayo Akinfewa superbly denied by Dons 'keeper Willy Gueret in injury time, but there was to be no late recovery.
Dons up and running in League 1, leaping off the foot of the table and making it two out of two at home.
90+3mins - Jackman's corner from the right keeps nerves jangling in the Dons camp but Gueret comes to claim it and is fouled.
90+1mins - Willy Gueret keeps the Dons in front with a fabulous piece of goalkeeping. Larkin's break in behind the Dons defence draws O'Hanlon across to stop him, but the Cobblers substitute squares nicely for Akinfenwa. Just Gueret to beat from 12 yards, the Frenchman is too big an obstacle to pass as he gets out like a shot to block at the striker's feet.
90mins - Error from Stirling as he tries to cut out Jackman's right-wing cross sends hearts into a few mouths. Navarro hammers the ball clear. Four minutes of added time between the Dons and three points.
89mins - Lewington picks up the man of the match award from match sponsors RT Machinary. It's been a superb performance from today's captain.
88mins - Free-kick given against Leven this time deep in Dons territory. Eddie Newton is out to the edge of the technical area, screaming at the defence to step up. Jackman's delivery is poor and Lewington heads away.
87mins - Well having seemingly not blown for the foul on Leven, Mr Ward has now given the Dons the free-kick the crowd were screaming for.
86mins - It's gone off half way inside the Northampton half as Leven goes down under a strong challenge from Coke. The Northampton man gets in Leven's face unhappy at how he went down and Leven reacts angrily. Bodies are wading in but referee Gavin Ward, to his credit, breaks things up quickly. Coke escapes with a booking.
83mins - Good little spell of pressure for the visitors as Osman gives Regan a headache down the left. His first cross is brought down by Constantine who is blocked by the recovering Stirling and his second is caught in the middle by Gueret.
81mins - Final change for Northampton as Gilligan comes off to be replaced by Colin Larkin.
79mins - Wilbraham's back on the field after Gallen had kicked the ball back to the visitors and the Dons come forward again. Lewington's chipped ball over the top finds Gallen raiding into the inside left channel. From an increasingly difficult angle his left-foot shot is saved well by Bunn.
78mins - Wilbraham's gone down holding his face in the Northampton area after a clash with one of the Cobblers defenders. The referee doesn't seem to have given a foul but is certainly talking to Hughes.
76mins - Referee Gavin Ward comes across to his fourth official to hand him something thrown from the away end. It's unclear what was thrown or who it was aimed at but we're sure to hear more.
74mins - Super play from Gallen who shows great strength to hold off Mark Hughes before hooking the ball out to Wright on the right. Wrigth exchanges passes with Navarro before standing a cross to the far post which is just too high for Wilbraham. Coke is down in the Dons area after stumbling under Regan's tackle and draws a less-than-complimentary reaction from the Cowshed.
73mins - Change for Northampton as Doig comes off for attacking midfielder Giles Coke.
71mins - After some treatment, Gyepes is back on the field and seemingly okay, which is the first concern. Dons make a third change as Danny Swailes, understandably still short on match fitness, is replaced by Jude Stirling.
68mins - Controversy out on the pitch as a Dons ball forward and a clash of heads sees Gyepes flat out on the deck. The Dons have a three-on-two break 25 yards from the Cobblers goal, but the whistle goes as Wilbraham feeds Wright so Gyepes can get treatment. Roberto Di Matteo is out of his dugout, unhappy that his team has been robbed of a golden chance to make it 2-0.
66mins - GOAL ! MK DONS 1 NORTHAMPTON TOWN 0 - AARON WILBRAHAM
Dons find the breakthrough from a setpiece as Wilbraham bags his first of the season. Wright wins another corner down the right after his cross was cut out at the near post. Leven swings it in from the right, Wilbraham meets it at the far post and the ball crosses the line despite a desperate attempt from a man in black.
63mins - Cummings has made an instant impression, first just failing to get a good connection on Wright's cross and then showing good strength to hold off his marker and control Wilbraham's flick. His shot is always rising over the bar from just inside the box though.
62mins - Sam Baldock is the man to make way for Kevin Gallen up front. Sturm comes off to hand Cummings, a Chelsea loanee, a Dons debut.
61mins - We're going to see a double change from the Dons as Shaun Cummings and Kevin Gallen prepare to come on. Jackman swings a dangerous free-kick into the Dons area and Gueret catches it well as it drops over the head of Doig.
59mins - Gueret drops well on a long-range shot from Jackman and sends the Dons on the attack again. Once more it's Wright terrorising the Cobblers down the right and Osman forces his cross behind for a corner before Leven can hook it home.
58mins - Chance of the game falls the way of Sturm and somehow he's failed to put the Dons in front. Wright manages to squirm free of Davis on the right and stands a great ball to the far post. Sturm has a free jump at it but heads agonisingly wide from six yards out. Should have scored.
57mins - Attendance comes through as 12,078 including 3,540 from Northampton.
55mins - Change coming for the visitors and it's Guttridge making way for Abdul Osman. Good pressure from the Dons as first Sturm's dangerous cross is cleared and then a burst from Navarro into the box sees his cross from the same flank just cut out by Bunn.
54mins - Akinfenwa's strength sees him hold off Swailes inside the Dons half before the ball is worked right to Crowe. The little wingback moves inside and fires a left-foot shot from 22 yards that is watched wide by Gueret.
53mins - Northampton have been quick to shut the Dons' options down inside the Cobblers half of the pitch, Lewington the latest to be left with few options down this left touchline. Patience looks to be the key for the home side.
50mins - Wright's at it again down that right flank as Leven's switch picks him out onf the touchline. He drives infield this time away from Davis and Bunn has to get down sharply at his near post to keep out his 20-yard drive.
48mins - First decent movement from the Dons in the second half as Wright works a way out of traffic in his own half before a one-two with Baldock sends him scampering down the right. His cross picked off by Bunn in the centre though.
4.07pm - SECOND HALF KICKS OFF
HALF-TIME: MK DONS 0 NORTHAMPTON TOWN 0
A very even first half in the first meeting between these two local neighbours. It's been cat-and-mouse at times and at others end-to-end, but certainly entertaining.
Employing a five-man defence, Northampton have proved difficult for the Dons to penetrate, though through Mark Wright and Florian Sturm Roberto Di Matteo's team have tried their best to stretch the Cobblers.
There's been one oustanding chance a-piece, both falling to big strikers. First Aaron Wilbraham saw his point-blank header from a Dean Lewington cross somehow clawed out by Mark Bunn. Then Northampton's Adebayo Akinfenwa found himself through on goal after a long ball downfield but scuffed hopelessly wide on 28 minutes to the disappointment of 3,000 Cobblers fans behind the goal.
Even Stevens at the break. The first goal could make all the difference.
45+2mins - Very close to a chance for Wright, as Sturm works good space on the left and pulls the ball back from the deadball line. Wright is setting himself for a first-time shot from 14 yards but Guttridge reads the danger and stabs the ball out of his reach.
44mins - Wright has looked the Dons most threatening outlet down this right side, again gathering a Wilbraham knockdown to start an attack. The winger drives a cross into the box as Doig comes across and Bunn is out confidently to catch. Two minutes added time.
42mins - Northampton win a free-kick 25 yards from the Dons goal, but Constantine's right-footed effort is comfortably caught by Gueret.
41mins - Another piece of awkward handing from Bunn as he fields what should be a routine ball after O'Hanlon had headed down Regan's free-kick from deep. No real threat around him but he'd like his handling to be a touch cleaner.
38mins - The end-to-end nature to the game has subsided somewhat as we head for half-time. Dons trying to get forward on the break though as Gueret tries to feed a quick throw to right but Doig gets across to cut it out. Davis is able to cross towards Constantine from the left, who tees up his strike-partner Akinfewa on the edge of the box, but his shot is well wide.
36mins - Gueret worked again but far more comfortably this time as he drops on an ambitious 30-yard strike from defender Gyepes.
33mins - Willy Gueret is called into action for the first time in the Dons goal as Akinfenwa bundles his way round Swailes and fires in a right-footed shot from the edge of the box - the Frenchman parrying the ball past his left-hand post.
29mins - Incident packed now as first Baldock scampers through to the roar of the Cowshed but is just thwarted by the foot of the out-rushing Bunn on the edge of the box. Dons come forward again, Wright whipping a cross in from the right towards Wilbraham, but the striker goes down under pressure from Gyepes. The Cowshed, and Wilbraham, are adament he was pulled but the referee gives nothing.
28mins - Akinfenwa's just missed a glorious chance to give his side the lead. Bunn's long clearance is missed by Swailes and O'Hanlon and Akinfenwa is clean through on Gueret with a bouncing ball in the box. He can't get it down though and scuffs horribly wide from seven yards.
27mins - Again it doesn't quite come off for that Dons triangle on the left as Wilbraham, Sturm and Baldock try to link up. The Austrian's final ball inside for Baldock is just too far behind the young marksman. Wilbraham escapes down the left moments later and looks for a way inside but his low shot is easily saved by Bunn.
25mins - This three-man Cobblers central defence is making life very hard for Wilbraham. They have an extra body in the box every time the Dons load in a cross.
22mins - Slightly broken attacking movements from the Dons as Baldock, Wilbraham and Sturm look for the right wavelength. A loose ball drops between Lewington and Crowe on halfway, each with about 15 yards to reach it and Lewington powers through with a trademark tackle.
18mins - Terrific, driven crossfield ball from Navarro finds Wright down the right flank. The winger stops the ball on the deadball line before clipping in a left-foot cross that Gyepes stoops to head away from Wilbraham. Leven is caught from behind by Guttridge but Mr Ward says the Northampton man played the ball.
16mins - Davis gets away with what looked like handball there as he falls onto the ball after Wright had nicked it off him in Northampton territory. Referee Gavin Ward waves play on though.
14mins - Good play from Sturm down the left flank as he takes the ball off Gilligan before working his way infield and finding Wright inside him. Wright gets the ball out of his feet 30 yards out but his shot is well off target.
12mins - Dons coming forward this time and Wilbraham is close to opening the scoring. The big man sends Sturm off down the left hand side and the Austrian drops the ball back to allow Lewington to cross. His delivery is hung nicely into the centre of the six-yard box and Wilbraham's header is beaten away by Bunn.
11mins - The strength of Akinfenwa is really something to behold. Northampton clear their lines up towards the big striker and Regan just bounces off him. Lewington comes across to halt Gilligan's progress as he works a way forward down the left.
10mins - Committed piece of defending by Leven, who throws himself in the way of a Liam Davis shot on the edge of the box and does enough to put the wing-back off.
8mins - Cobblers come forward again as Gilligan finds space in midfield, driving towards goal before his shot from 25 yards deflects off O'Hanlon and over the bar. The corner from the left is cleared.
7mins - First decent opening for Northampton there as Jackman tricked his way round Navarro out on the right, his ball across the middle of the box goes unconverted though as Lewington hooks it away for a throw-in/
6mins - It is indeed a three-man central defence for the visitors, though their formation would be better-described as 5-3-2 at present.
4mins - Brilliant from Navarro who, having lost possession to Guttridge in midfield, instantly wins it back with a firm tackle and feeds Wright on the right flank. Wright's early cross is a very good one towards Baldock but the young striker can't quite jump high enough to make a connection.
1min - Early attack for the home team as they win a free-kick on the left flank, Wright swings it into the box and Mark Bunn, the Cobblers goalkeeper, gathers awkwardly at the second attempt.
3.02pm - KICK OFF
3.00pm - Dons have evidently lost the toss as they will attack the Cowshed in the first half, something they would traditionally prefer to do after the break. Northampton, all in black, will attack the end housing their supporters in the first period.
2.58pm - The teams emerge from the tunnel led by six ballboys carrying the Champions Flag, which has been presented to the Dons following last season's League 2 triumph. The players complete the now-customary fairplay handshake, the Dons led by Lewington, before heading for their adoring fans in the Cowshed.
2.57pm - Northampton are unchanged from Tuesday night's impressive League Cup win at Millwall and start with Adebayo Akinfenwa and Leon Constantine in attack. The Cobblers are likely to employ a 3-5-2 formation this afternoon with Chris Doig at the heart of the defence. It will be interesting to see how the Dons cope against a five-man midfield.
2.55pm - TEAM NEWS. The news from the Dons dressing room is that Keith Andrews misses out on the action this afternoon and is replaced in midfield by Alan Navarro. Dean Lewington captains the side in Andrews' absence. Elsewhere, Sam Baldock retains his place up front after his first senior goal against Norwich in midweek and Sean O'Hanlon returns to the defence to resume his partnership with Danny Swailes. Florian Sturm starts on the left of a four-man midfield while Carl Regan returns to right full-back.
2.50pm - Welcome to stadiummk as MK Dons get their home league campaign under way, and there couldn't be a better game to start us off. Local rivals Northampton Town make the short trip down the M1 for the first meeting between the two clubs and we're sure to see an interesting afternoon's football.
Around 3,000 Cobblers fans have made the journey to stadiummk this afternoon, we're expecting a crowd of around 12,000 in total and the action gets underway from 3.00pm.
