Clive Platt finds the net for the Dons in the 35th minute

A late goal from Chester substitute Jon Walters gave the visitors an unlikely win and consigned the Dons to their first home loss this season.

Defeat had never seemed on the cards for the Dons, especially having taken the lead in the first half through Clive Platt and generally dominating proceedings from start to finish.

Even when Ashley Westwood cancelled out the Dons lead after the break, a win still looked likely for Martin Allen's side, who will now be scratching their heads as to just how this one got away.

Prior to the game, Martin Allen made three significant changes to the team starting line-up, with Lloyd Dyer, Sean O'Hanlon and Jamie Smith returning to the side, with Smith given a second chance to wear the captain's armband.

Making way for the restored trio were the suspended pair of Jon-Paul McGovern and Aaron Wilbraham, joined by Leon Crooks who took a place on the sub's bench.

Straight from the off the Dons took the game to Chester, forcing the visitors deep into their own half.

Within the first 15 minutes, the Dons had three promising efforts at goal, first from Ben Chorley after a half cleared free kick, followed by a rasping drive just wide from Gareth Edds and attempted lob that nearly came off for Paul Mitchell.

At the other end, Adolfo Baines had to be at his acrobatic best in the 14th minute to palm Laurence Wilson's long range strike away from goal to safety - a fine save.

Ten minutes later and Baines was again in action, this time to get down low and block Kevin Sandwith's goal-bound free kick from thirty yards.

Back on the attack, the Dons threatened to open the scoring on the half hour mark, when Dyer skinned wing back Steven Vaughan before lifting a teasing ball into the six yard box, which was no more than a whisker away from the head of Clive Platt.

Withing five minutes, Platt had another chance to break the deadlock and this time buried the chance.

A long ball over the top from Baines was brought down by Dyer and laid off for Scott Taylor to shoot at goal. His effort was charged down, straight to the feet of Platt, who finished with aplomb from 15 yards.

Three minutes later and the Dons faithful were again on the feet to cheer a goal from Platt, who rose superbly to head home a corner Edds.

However, as the Dons set off to celebrate, referee Fred Graham played the party-pooper as he blew his whistle to award the visitors a free kick, presumably for a fould on 'keeper John Danby.

Then, with half time just three minutes away, it was the turn of Taylor to come close, as he side-footed wide from five yards, racing to get on the end of yet another dangerous ball from Dyer - who was proving to be a thorn in the side of Chester.

Ben ChorleyThe second half began in a similar fashion with the Dons firmly on top and forcing Chester back. That said, it was the visitors who had the first chance of the half when Baines was called on to make a sharp save after Wilson collected a long ball forward,

Then, with 57 minutes on the clock, Chester levelled the scores when a short corner found its way to Ashley Westwood at the near post, with the former Northampton defender finishing neatly on the volley.

After losing the lead and having been on the back foot for a good few minutes the Dons looked to surge forward again and attack.

With 65 minutes on the clock, a half chance did come the way of goalscorer Platt, when he rose superbly to meet Dyer's left wing cross, but his header at goal lacked power and was saved well by Danby.

As the game progressed, it began to look as Chester were happy to shut up shop and claim a point, dropping deeper and deeperto stop the Dons getting in behind.

The Dons cause was not helped, however, when they seemed to be denied a certain penalty on 73 minutes, whe Vaughan looked to have a handled inside the area.

A high ball came down and bounced up at a peculiar angle, striking Vaughan near the elbow, but referee Graham though otherwise and turned away the cries for a spot kick.

But with 88 minutes on the clock, the turnaround was complete with Chester taking the lead through substitute Jon Walters.

With the Dons holding a very high defensive line, Walters sprung the offside trap before jinkin his way past Smith and Baines to roll the ball home into the empty net.

Having gone behind, the Dons threw everything at the visitors in search of an equaliser and a share of the points. Alas, it was not to be as Chester dug deep to cling on to the win.

Having been ahead and firmly on top in the first half, the Dons will no doubt be very disappointed to have lost at home for the first time this season. Hopefully today's result will be the catalyst for greater things to come in the next few weeks.
