An 86th-minute goal from Gareth Edds gave the MK Dons their fourth win in a row and a massive boost in their search for League One safety.
After Clive Platt's early goal had been cancelled out soon after the break by Colin Larkin, Edds' late strike combined with a series of superb saves from Matt Baker has now given the Dons a great chance of beating the drop.
Fielding an unchanged starting line-up from that against Hartlepool, the game began as a tight and nervy affair, but it was the Dons who took the lead through Clive Platt after 13 minutes with the first real chance of the match. The in-form target man showed great strength to force his way through a crowd (pictured right) before heading home Filipe Morais' cross from a short corner to give the Dons exactly the start they would have wanted.
After the goal, the game opened up with chances at either end. Janos Kovacs forced Matt Baker to make a tidy save before Derek Niven shot wildy over the bar for the Spireites with a clear sight at goal.
At the other end, Platt did well to tee up Ben Chorley from a Dean Lewington free-kick, but the former Arsenal man's crisply struck volley was inches wide of the target.
With half-time approaching, both sides continued to attack and create chances. Kovacs again headed over from a Jamie O'Hara free kick, before O'Hara himself flashed a shot high and wide of the Dons goal.
In attack, Morais and Leon Crooks both forced saves from Barry Roche and Gary Smith had a great opportunity from a slide-rule pass by Platt, but Roche was quick off his line to block the shot and keep the Dons lead to one at the break.
The second half began brightly for the Dons who continued to push forward with Ben Chorley striking a volley wide of goal from a tight angle.
Despite the Dons positive start to the period, it was the home side who scored on 49 minutes to level the match. A free kick from O'Hara found its way to Mark Allott and his knock down was inch perfect giving Colin Larkin a simple tap in from close range.
Eight minutes later, Izale McLeod replaced Aaron Wilbraham and was soon into action, earning a free kick on the left wing. Smith struck the kick at goal with plenty of pace, but Roche was on had to tip over the bar.
Chesterfield continued to push forward but with 69 minutes on the clock, Baker made three world-class saves in quick succession to keep the scores level, first denying Larkin who was clean through on goal before making an outstanding double save to keep out Niven and Allott.
However, the tables were turned in the 85th minute when Edds scored with literally his first touch of the match. Scott Taylor played the ball inside to Platt, who held the ball up well before laying off to the Aussie midfielder who had enough space to beat Roche with a driven shot into the bottom left hand corner.
From then on in the Dons dug deep to keep the home side out to earn themselves another fantastic victory. The Great Escape is a much over-used cliche for these circumstances, but this victory gives the Dons every chance of doing exactly that.
