Allan Smart v ChesterfieldAfter leading for nearly the entirety of the game, MK Dons were forced to settle for a solitary point in the 1-1 New Year's Day draw with Chesterfield.
Alan Smart, pictured right, had put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot after just five minutes, but Ian Evatt's late leveller ensured the Dons remain in the League One relegation zone and ended boss Danny Wilson's 100 per cent home record.
Wilson was forced into one change to his starting 11. Midfielder Anthony Danze, on loan from Crystal Palace, was ruled out with a hamstring pull, and Gary Smith was thrust back into the side.
On a windy but mild New Year's afternoon, the Dons started out by attacking the West Stand after a minute's silence for the victims of the Tsunami disaster in Asia.
The home side didn't have to wait long to take the lead. It came after five minutes when the Dons had a penalty. Wade Small latched onto Ian Evatt's weak backpass, got ahead of Chesterfield keeper Carl Muggleton in the race for the ball before being felled by the keeper's dive. Allan Smart then sent Muggleton the wrong way from the spot to give the hosts the perfect start. However Muggleton somehow escaped a sending off, much to the relief of visiting manager Roy McFarland, who had travelled without a replacement keeper.
At the other end Matt Baker made a smart reaction save on seven minutes to get a firm hand onto Mark Allott's close range effort.
Baker then showed safe hands in holding onto Adam Smith's long range piledriver after the winger had made good progress down the left.
Evatt redeemd himself with a well-timed challenge on Small after 15 minutes after a good ball into the box from Smart.
And seconds later he was down at the other end, firing over the crossbar after a long ball had not been dealt with by the home defence.
The Dons continued to look the stronger outfit in midfield, with Smith and Paul Mitchell bossing the centre of the park.
And they nearly went 2-0 up when Ben Chorley found himself unmarked for Nicky Rizzo's 20th minute corner, but the big centre-half could only get a tame header on the ball and Muggleton made a relatively easy save.
Chesterfield had a glorious opportunity to level on 22 minutes when Shane Nicholson curled in a free-kick from the right which found Aaron Downes at the far post, but his angled effort was well high and wide of the target.
And from Nicholson's corner one minute later the ball broke to Mark Allott in a central position, but he also fired his shot over the crossbar.
Smith got a timely touch onto Derek Niven's shot on 27 minutes to deflect it over as the visiting side began to impose themselves on the Dons.
The rain began to sweep across as the half neared it's conclusion, and the strong winds made it increasingly difficult to judge the pace and direction of any high balls or clearances.
Palmer made a goal-line clearance to deny Wayne Allison on 38 minutes after Baker, pictured below left, had been bustled out of a hanging cross.
Evatt had the ball in the back of the net after heading home on 43 minutes, but the effort was ruled out for offside by referee Paul Armstrong.

Matt Baker v ChesterfieldThe second half saw the Dons with the advantage of the strong wind behind them.
Dean Lewington's crossfield ball had just too much pace for Izale McLeod on 47 minutes as the ball flew into touch.
Evatt was agonisingly close to levelling on 52 minutes with a glancing shot which had Baker beaten but flew inches wide of the far post.
Mitchell picked up a booking on 55 minutes after a late challenge on Niven. And seconds later Smart earned himself a yellow for not retreating at the free-kick.
The Dons had to be alert to Chesterfield's quick counter-attacking, but looked capable of causing damage themselves with McLeod seeing plenty of action down the right wing.
Wilson opted to make a switch midway through the half, pushing McLeod up front and moving Small back to right wing.
Chesterfield began to throw caution to the wind, and Palmer had to get his head in the thick of things on 75 minutes to clear a dangerous situation from a swirling cross.
Smith put Smart in on goal after 78 minutes, but the Scottish striker never got the ball under control before lashing an effort which was well off-target.
Wilson made his first substitution on 78 minutes, throwing Jason Puncheon on for McLeod.
Rizzo crashed in a 25-yarder which was not far over the crossbar with the help of the following wind on 80 minutes.
Chesterfield snatched the equaliser they deserved on 83 minutes when Evatt crashed home a shot from the edge of the penalty area after the Dons had again failed to clear their lines.
The last few minutes of the game was fairly tense, with both sides seemingly happy with the hard-fought point. But it will be the home side who were most disappointed at not hanging on for the victory.
Wilson made an injury-time substitution, Rizzo replaced by Shola Oyedele. And Small had a brilliant chance to win it with virtually the last kick, bursting into the box only for Muggleton to make a brave stop at his feet four yards out.
