Assistant manager Karl Robinson dedicated MK Dons' 3-1 win over Southend to the fans that endured last week's humiliation at Carlisle.

Paul Ince's side got their play-off bid back on track as two goals from Mark Carrington and one from Andros Townsend saw off the struggling Shrimpers.

Seven days on from their 5-0 mauling at Brunton Park, the Dons' performance was in total contrast on their own patch and built on the hard work and desire Ince had accused them of lacking last week.

Karl told the media after the game: "We felt we let the fans down last week, it wasn't acceptable and you could see that by the way the players responded today.

"It's a win and any sort of win is better than what we got last Saturday so we're more than pleased.

"It's put us closer to Millwall and if we can beat them on Tuesday we'll be level on points. Results can give you momentum and what a game Tuesday is to look forward to now.

"The fans are magnificent, they love this Football Club and we're no different, we all want to see the same progress.

"We just hope over the next few months we can keep putting in performances like today and we'll get into those play-off places."

Carrington's double, which took his tally for the season to four goals, came on his first home league start since August and was a reward for the 22-year-old's ongoing patience.

Kept on the sidelines by the impressive performances of Stephen Gleeson this term, the former Crewe midfielder grasped his opportunity with both hands to the delight of Robinson.

Karl said: "Carra's goal record compared to games played is phenomenal for a midfield player, but the quality we've got right through the team means we've got players like Mark Carrington who can always come in and do a job.

"He trains magnificently every day of the week and that's why he was able to put in a performance like that. He's still very young, he's learning his trade and he will get better. He can win the ball on the ground, but he also gets into the box late and takes his chances when they come along.

"He's still got a lot of work to do - we gave the ball away a lot today - so sometimes his goals mask other things he needs to work on. He'll work on his ball retention and become a good all-round midfield player, not just a goalscoring one."
