WORLD CUP SUBMISSION LOOMS

Posted on: Fri 20 Nov 2009

Dr Ann Limb, the Chair of the team working to bring World Cup football to Milton Keynes in 2018 says she is "very hopeful" of success.

The bid team has spent the past six months campaigning, meeting politicians - including Prime Minister Gordon Brown - and lobbying people of influence.

2018: Back the Bid

And with just a few days to go until the final bid submission has to be handed in to FA officials at Wembley, Dr Limb believes that the hard work of a lot of people in the city could pay off.

"Many people thought we were under-dogs at the beginning of our campaign," she said, "but we have proven that there are many strong, compelling reasons why Milton Keynes should be successful and we are now being taken very seriously."

Dr Limb and other members of the consortium team have produced a massive document outlining exactly why Milton Keynes should be a host city, and this will be taken to Wembley on November 26.

The document outlines many of the good things about the city including:

- We already have an excellent football venue in stadiummk. Designed to UEFA Elite specification by the architects behind the new Wembley and The Emirates stadium, it has the capacity to be expanded to World Cup specifications.

- MK is just 43 years old but has become one of England's most vibrant cities and home to 230,000 people.

- Our location is perfect for visitors, centrally located half way between Birmingham and London and mid-way between Oxford and Cambridge, and with excellent rail and road routes, and three international airports within 75 minutes drive time.

- MK's entertainment and leisure centres are at national and international standards of centres of excellence.

- The city's grid system is very important when it comes to controlling large numbers of people to big events. It allows flexible and free movement of traffic and provides multiple choices of routes between any two points across the city.

- The city has a 250km network of redways, traffic-free cycling, wheelchair and pedestrian paths that provide mobility and access to all parts of the city.

- MK is very green. Forty per cent of the new city area is green space and there are 22 million trees. Planners from all over the world visit MK to see how it works.
