MK DONS U18 2 BRISTOL CITY U18 0
Under 18 Report by Lee Jelley
MK Dons Under 18s showed excellent strength of character against Bristol City on Saturday to record their first victory of the season in an exciting 2-0 win at Woughton.
The result was particularly impressive as for long periods of the game the Dons appeared to be playing against a 12th man with gale force winds blowing into their faces, but to their credit they dealt with it superbly.
Early skills from Hayden Carter enabled the Dons to win a corner after just a few minutes but it came to nothing and was cleared by the Bristol defence. Open chances were few and far between in the first half for both sides, the pick of them being a great strike from Daniel Delderfield that whistled over the bar after some great work from Daniel Powell.
Powell was superb throughout the game and his immense box-to-box work-rate was a highlight, however it was his tidy footwork that allowed Delderfield to break the deadlock just after the half-hour mark.
Carter used his superior pace down the right hand side before shifting the ball to Powell, who proceeded to ride a couple of challenges and rolled a pass to Delderfield who slotted the ball coolly into the net.
City, to their credit did not let their heads drop and they were unlucky to be on level terms five minutes later when some great work by Joe Edwards gave him and opening that he smashed off the crossbar and the ball was frantically cleared by the Dons defence.
At the interval the Dons were 1-0 up and looked good for their lead, even if they rode their luck at times, knowing the wind would be a problem in the second half. This proved to be the case and skipper David King had to rally his troops to battle the elements and keep their valuable lead.
That lead though was doubled on 70 minutes, perhaps against the run of play, by substitute Charlie Collins. A long ball was played across the pitch and a mistake by City's Chris Willis meant that Collins found himself with a great chance, which he duly smashed past the keeper at the near post.
As Bristol pumped more and more long balls forward, the wind picked up and towards the end of the game the young Dons were looking bruised and battered.
But despite a couple of goalmouth scrambles, they held strong and did themselves, and their coach proud on a day to remember.
