Under-18s manager Mike Dove expressed his delight as his young Dons continued their impressive pre-season form with a win over Birmingham.

Stephane Koffi's solitary strike in the 65th minute sent the Dons on their way to a win over their Premiership opponents at Woughton on the Green on Tuesday.

Like the first team, it's two wins in a row so far this summer and Mike has been impressed.

He said: "It was the second game in and a big test against a Premiership Academy so to win is a big boost. Fitness is looking good and I'm impressed with the style of football the lads are starting to play.

"Birmingham had three England internationals in a diamond-shaped midfield and I thought we coped well with our 4-4-2.

Stephane Koffi

Stephane Koffi bagged the only goal against Birmingham.

"At half-time we spoke about how we could cope better with them and they went out there and did great. We had a young French trialist playing in midfield who didn't speak a great deal of English but he was right in the middle of what we were doing and I was really pleased with him.

Koffi's goal, his third of pre-season after a double against Ampthill last week, was quite typical of the young striker. Loitering dangerously wide on the left, he moved the ball inside and from seemingly facing the wrong way, hooked his foot round a shot inside the near post.

The young Blues 'keeper may have looked at fault, but he was simply deceived by an excellent piece of improvisation.

"Stephane is looking very bright at the moment," Mike said. "He's very inventive and he found a goal from nowhere."

The closest either side came in a frantic first half was a Liam Kelly free-kick the Birmingham 'keeper stooped to block.

Koffi might have made the game safe on 72 when he launched himself at the rebound from Sam Collins' vicious free-kick, but was denied by an inspired save.

Dons: Fox, Mitchell-Coop, King, Page, Collins, Kelly (Williams 45), Shuter, Nelson, Trialist, Powell (Delderfield 45), Koffi.
