Stretching to succeed

The squad are using a new secret weapon in fitness and recovery to support them in their inaugural Sky Bet Championship campaign – yoga.

Sweat Studios, based in The Hub, Rillaton Walk, is helping to increase the players’ flexibility, fitness and aid their recovery through weekly sessions.

The move is part of the fitness studio’s Real Yoga campaign to help make the exercise more 'accessible' and dispel the myths surrounding it.

Kirsty Lowe, founder of Sweat Studios, said: “We are thrilled that MK Dons chose us to work with. It’s great news that more professional athletes are understanding yoga and the fitness benefits practicing it regularly can offer. By simply learning the correct postures and along with the breathing it can be a really modern and exceptionally effective way to keep fit and healthy.”

Damien Doyle, Head of Sports Science, Fitness and Conditioning at the Club, said: “Our players have already started to see the benefits of attending the yoga classes at Sweat Studios. Having yoga as part of our training regime will help to rejuvenate tired muscles after a heavy game, aid injury avoidance and flexibility.”

MK Dons attacker Carl Baker said: “Already after just one session I can tell the difference yoga has made. I’m looking forward to the weekly sessions and hope to increase my flexibility, which will help me on the pitch.”

This is not the first time Sweat Studios has worked with professional sports stars. Earlier this year Northampton’s Saints players began a series of yoga classes to compliment their training.

The studio offers hot yoga, a highly popular yoga form that uses heat and humidity to boost muscle dexterity and detoxification. Hot yoga offers a complete workout of cardio, flexibility and strength.

The studio also offers non-heated classes aimed at improving fitness and wellbeing through yoga as well as sessions for people looking for a gentler workout and pre and post natal women.

All classes are categorised by how hot the room is, and whether they focus on cardio, flexibility or strength, so there really is a class for everyone.

Sweat Studios, which has showers and spacious changing rooms, opened its doors last year with the aim of breaking down preconceptions about yoga.
