Manager Karl Robinson admits the victory over Manchester United still hasn’t quite sunk in but insists his focus is solely on Saturday’s clash with Crawley Town.
The Dons boss led his side to a stunning 4-0 triumph over the Premier League giants on Tuesday evening in front of a sell-out stadiummk. Strikers Will Grigg and Benik Afobe both bagged braces in the win, while Robinson’s defence kept a third straight clean sheet.
“It still hasn’t sunk in yet,” he told MK Dons Player. “It was a remarkable evening for all involved and for me personally, as well as my staff - it was a night that we’ll never forget. It’s still quite surreal seeing the scoreline.
“The game is up there with some of the best for me. Obviously the first AFC Wimbledon game still stands out for me but to play Manchester United and beat them like we did was special.
“Yes, they made changes but there were still a number of world class players out there and I thought the players were magnificent. It’s disappointing for me that people are talking about their mistakes but we had to force them into those errors. I’d rather give my players the credit than criticise others.
“I thought we, once again, conducted ourselves impeccably when we could so easily have gotten carried away. We did our job in a very professional manner and it just showed the maturity of the Football Club.”
He continued: “Hopefully we can use this as a catalyst for the rest of our games. We know how difficult Saturday is going to be against a good Crawley side but if there is a player who can’t utilise that victory over Manchester United then they’re in the wrong industry.”
The attendance for Tuesday’s game was announced as 26,969, which is a new stadiummk record for any sporting event – surpassing the previous record of 22,220 set for the rugby clash between Northampton Saints and Munster.
“To walk out and see the stadium full was like a dream. I didn’t want to say it before the game but my one wish was for us to score a goal just so we could see the roof come off the place and by the time the fourth goal went in and the final whistle went the noise was deafening.
“I’m sure it’s something I’m sure the Chairman will never forget and, as I said before the game, this game was for Milton Keynes, the Dons but also as the Chairman and his wife Berni, who have been through so much.”
