Report: Dons 5-1 Yeovil Town

3 May 2015

The Dons were promoted to the Sky Bet Championship after a sensational 5-1 success over Yeovil Town at stadiummk.

Karl Robinson’s men needed to better Preston North End’s result and, courtesy of their win and the Lilywhites’ 1-0 defeat at Colchester United, the Dons will be playing in the second tier of English football in 2015/16.

Darren Potter and Rob Hall replaced Lewis Baker and Dean Bowditch in the starting XI for the crucial clash with the Glovers.

Player of the Year Carl Baker got the Dons off to the perfect start on seven minutes, receiving the ball off Samir Carruthers, driving towards goal and rifling a low drive into the bottom right-hand corner. 1-0

Samir Carruthers and Dean Lewington both stung the palms of Artur Krysiak shortly afterwards as the men from MK1 looked to double their advantage in quick fashion.

The lively Carruthers crashed a long-range volley not too far wide on 12 minutes while, at the other end, David Martin watched a Nathan Smith headed past the post.

Grigg forced Krysiak into a save from a header as the midway point of the first half approached as the Dons began to really take control.

They made their dominance count on 22 minutes when Dean Lewington curled home a stunning 25-yard free-kick after Rob Hall had been fouled following some neat footwork. 2-0

Grigg almost make it 3-0 on 27 minutes but he slid his effort just wide off the post after latching on to an incisive pass from Dele Alli.

Another unlikely source – Darren Potter – volleyed home 12 yards out from Lewington’s knock-back to complete a superb first 35 minutes for the Dons. 3-0

Things got even better four minutes later when the brilliant Baker’s pinpoint cross was glanced home by Will Grigg to put Karl Robinson’s side 4-0 up and notch up the 100th league goal of the campaign.

Hall flashed the first effort of the second half over the bar as the Dons threatened a fifth while, at the other end, Spence threw his body on the line to block a shot.

Yeovil pulled one back on 56 minutes when a right-wing cross was turned into his own net by Spence (4-1), but the Dons responded and Carruthers shot over the bar from 25 yards.

Alli couldn’t get enough on Hall’s cross before Carl Baker fired the recycled ball over the bar with 25 minutes remaining.

Bowditch replaced Grigg on 69 minutes before Ben Reeves made return his injury shortly afterwards, coming on for Carruthers.

The latter made an immediate impact, curling in a superb free-kick which Lewington expertly headed into the back of the net to double his tally. The celebration is worth a look too! 5-1

That put the seal on a sensational showing and season. 2014/15 will never be forgotten.
