Report: Buckingham 0-12 Dons

18 July 2015

The Dons romped to a 12-0 victory over Buckingham Athletic in the second of two games on Saturday.

Ben Reeves’ hat-trick, braces by Simon Church, Carl Baker and Daniel Powell and strikes from Jordan Spence and young midfielder Andrew Osei-Bonsu led to the success, which backed up another convincing win, earlier in the day, at Newport Pagnell Town.

Karl Robinson’s second starting XI of the afternoon included a host of first-team players, including striker Simon Church, last season’s Player of the Year Carl Baker and midfielder Ben Reeves.

It was the latter who got the scoring started in the ninth minute when he drove onto Daniel Powell’s cutback and poked the ball past the Athletic keeper.

Reeves then turned provider to set up Baker for his first goal of the afternoon – a neat finish into the bottom right corner from the edge of the area – before Church made it three-nil with a close-range strike after Kabongo Tshimanga’s effort was parried.

On 23 minutes, just two after Church had added a third, Baker curled a beauty of a strike into the far corner to make it four-nil – a lead which was extended further three minutes later through Reeves’ 25-yard strike.

The Dons were relentless and moments before the half-hour mark Church scored another, this one much more appealing to the eye – a bending shot around the goalkeeper into the top right-hand corner.

Spence then made it seven by stabbing home Baker’s low cross at the near post before Reeves completing a 36-minute hat-trick to make it eight-nil with a drilled effort from just outside the box.

Winger Powell then made it nine just prior to the half-time whistle when he beat the offside trap, rounded the keeper and slotted home from a tight angle.

The men from MK1’s assertive display continued after the re-start, although the Athletic keeper did deny them plenty of opportunities to add more than they did with a string of fine saves.

He was, though, beaten by Tshimanga on 50 minutes when the young striker found the near corner with a low shot after being picked out by Baker.

A little while after Powell doubled his tally for the day after capping off a mazy run in from the left with a shot which squirmed past the Athletic stopper.

The scoring was then complete in the 74th minute when first-year apprentice Osei-Bonsu, one of a number of changes made by the Dons on 70, finished from just inside the box after good work from Kevin Owusu.

All in all it was a very positive afternoon for Robinson and his Dons players who, as well as their 18 goals scored, all made it through unscathed ahead of three more pre-season friendlies next week.

Starting XI: Burns (McCorkell 70); Spence (Kioso 70), Flanagan (Steele 70), Hickford (Hunt 70), Tilney (Omar 70); Hadden, Baker (Osei-Bonsu 70); Tshimanga (Brittain 70), Reeves (Logan 70), Powell (Furlong 70); Church (Owusu 70)
