Remember, remember the 5th November but 14 NCS graduates will always look back on this day as the one where they showcased their journeys in Houses of Parliament!
The lucky 14 travelled down to the capital to represent the MK Dons Sport and Education Trust’s 2014 Summer National Citizen Service cohort. In total, 102 young people graduated amongst 8 groups, completing several Social Action Projects across Milton Keynes and Bedfordshire.
NCS Graduate Kimberly Tilley said: “From the bottom of my heart, I want to say a big thank you for giving me the opportunity to go, it was definitely a day to remember.”
Jamie Bather, MK Dons SET NCS Co-ordinator, added: “Being able to let our NCS graduates showcase their hard work and social action project’s to such important individuals is brilliant.
“I hope that our visit has inspired our Graduates to continue volunteering in MK and Bedfordshire.”
A summer’s worth of hard work was noticed by local Labour & Co-operative Parliamentary Candidate for Milton Keynes South, Andrew Pakes, who invited a small group of the graduates down to the Houses of Parliament to meet Baronesses Oona King and Maggie Jones.
The group were ushered to a private office to meet Baroness King and Baroness Jones, where they were able to speak about the journeys they had all individually embarked upon and the excitement, fun and rewarding nature of the NCS programme delivered by the MK Dons SET.
The graduates were then taken on a VIP tour around the Houses of Parliament visiting the House of Lords and its Chamber, The House of Commons and Westminster Hall.
Speaking after the event, Baroness Jones said: “You couldn't fail to be impressed with the energy and enthusiasm of the young people we met. They have achieved so much personally and laid bare the myth that young people don't care about their local communities.”
Andrew Pakes, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Milton Keynes South, also commented: “The MK Dons Sport & Education Trust does amazing work with young people across the city.
“I visited the teenagers on the National Citizen Service programme with council leader Pete Marland over the summer. It was an inspiring visit and great to hear about how the different groups worked with the community, from helping spruce up the Secret Garden in Wolverton through to raising funds for local charities like MacIntyre.”
The MK Dons SET are currently delivering their Autumn 2014 NCS programme where 53 young people are planning four different Social Action Projects to carry out across Milton Keynes and Bedfordshire.
Furthermore, the MK Dons SET is now recruiting for their NCS Spring 2015 programme during the February half term.
