Matt Upson makes MK1 move

30 July 2015

MK Dons have signed former England international Matthew Upson following his departure from Premier League outfit Leicester City.

The centre-back joins on a one-year deal after completing a medical at stadiummk on Thursday.

He becomes Karl Robinson’s third signing of the week following on from the arrivals of Rob Hall and Sam Gallagher.

Upson, 36, brings a wealth of experience to MK1 having played 450 career appearances at club level. He also has 22 England caps to his name and was part of the Three Lions’ World Cup squad in 2010.

The defender has represented the likes of Arsenal, Birmingham City, West Ham United and Stoke City since making his professional debut in 1996. More recently, he has played for Brighton & Hove Albion and Leicester City – he was named Player of the Year for the former in 2013/14 after a terrific season in the Sky Bet Championship.

Speaking to MK Dons PlayerHD, Upson said: “I’m very pleased to be here and I’m excited about the new challenge. This is a Club that has grown in stature and I see it as an exciting place to be.

“Me and the gaffer have been chatting a lot about the style of football the team play and it’s something I feel I’ll fit into well. The experience I bring with me is something I’d like to think can help too.”

Manager Robinson added: “We’ve got ourselves an experienced defender who has played in the World Cup and the Premier League. I think having good leaders around the place is important.

“It’s a unique one in terms of the mould of player we would usually go for but sometimes they are there to be broken if it’s the right type of player.

“We are really excited about the experience he can bring. He’s also a calming influence and a good character.”

An interview with Matt will be available shortly on PlayerHD.
