Martin: A big occasion

27 January 2016

David Martin is well aware of the enormity of Sunday’s occasion but is keen to enjoy the moment.

The Dons take on the reigning Premier League champions Chelsea in an Emirates FA Cup fourth-round tie, in front of a bumper crowd at stadiummk – a match which will also be shown live on the BBC.

“I know what it means to everyone at the Club,” Martin told DOTRED. “It’s a chance for the Chairman and Club to show what MK Dons is all about. This game will give people the chance to see what the stadium is like and what brand of football we play.

“Hopefully we can get a good and memorable result but obviously the odds are stacked against us being minnows compared to the Premier League champions. It’s just about enjoying it really and trying to make a mark.”

He continued: “It’s human nature to let the nerves build-up a little bit more but you’ve just got to enjoy that and use it as a positive.”

Martin and the Dons have experience of big games, having faced – and beaten – a Premier League giant in Manchester United just last season.

While the 30-year-old goalkeeper is aware the chances of repeating the 4-0 success they enjoyed over United are pretty slim, he will be looking to draw confidence from the win ahead of Sunday’s clash.

“We can’t go into the game expecting to repeat what we did against Man Utd. As always in football, you should put everything that happens in the past to bed and concentrate on the next game.

“Obviously, though, if the experience of going through that game can help us in any way in this game then it’ll be a positive.”

Read the full interview with Martin in this Sunday's edition ofDOTRED, which will be available to buy from sellers around stadiummk as well as the Box Office for just £3.

The goalkeeper talks about his season so far as well as his relationship with goalkeeper coach Paul Heald. He also reveals his plans for the future - will he follow in his Dad's footsteps?
