Ian McLoughlin suffered his first defeat in Walsall colours on Saturday, after the Saddlers were beaten 2-0 by struggling Colchester United.

Dean Smith’s side had only lost once since the beginning of December prior to this weekend, but their good run of form came to an abrupt end courtesy of goals from former Don Jabo Ibehre and Freddie Sears.

McLoughlin was making his third straight appearance for the West Midlands side and pulled off a number of important stops throughout the match to prevent the U’s from extending their advantage further, in what was a disappointing visit to the Weston Homes Community Stadium for Walsall.

The 21-year-old shot stopper was first called into action on the half-four mark when he did well to come off his line and challenge Ibehre as the striker looked set to open the scoring.

The visitors, though, took the lead in the second-half when Ibehre was on hand to poke home after McLoughlin had denied Sears with a good save.

The former Republic of Ireland U-21 international was then forced into another save soon after - smartly stopping a Gavin Massey effort after some quick feet in the Saddlers penalty area.

However, the U’s did double their lead before end with Sears sweeping home after a low cross in the final stages of a forgettable afternoon for boss Smith’s men.
